Des Weiteren stecken im Chassis ein relativ großer 3100-mAh-Akku, 2 Gigabyte RAM und 16 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher. Letzterer kann optional via microSD-Karte zusätzlich erweitert werden.

Damit ist das ShotX in Deutschland mehr als 200 Euro günstiger als das ebenfalls jüngst angekündigte und sehr ähnlich ausgestattete HTC One A9. Das Huawei-Gerät kommt ab Werk allerdings noch mit Android 5.1.1 Lollipop und nicht wie das HTC-Flaggschiff bereits mit Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Microsoft hat in der vergangenen Nacht eine weitere Vorschauversion von Windows 10 Mobile für Smartphones veröffentlicht, die Windows Insider auf dem „Fast Ring" ab sofort ausprobieren können. Der neue Build 10572 folgt nur wenige Tage nach Beginn der Verteilung von Build 10549.Für alle Windows Insider, die jetzt hoffen, dass Build 10572 mit weniger Aufwand installiert werden kann als zuvor Build 10549, vorne weg die enttäuschende Nachricht: Auch für die Installation der aktuellsten Windows 10 Mobile Preview muss das zu aktualisierende Smartphone zunächst mit Hilfe des Windows Device Recovery Tools auf Windows Phone 8.1 zurückgesetzt werden. Erst danach kann über die Windows Insider App der Download von Windows 10 Mobile Build 10572 initiiert werden. Es gibt allerdings Hoffnung auf baldige Besserung, was dieses zwischenzeitliche Ärgernis der Windows 10 Mobile Entwicklung angeht. Microsoft erläutert in einem Blog-Beitrag, dass intern der Upgrade-Bug, der das umständliche Prozedere für Windows Insider nötig macht, mittlerweile behoben wurde und kommende Builds mit einer Versionsnummer größer als 10575 nicht mehr davon betroffen sein sollen.

Insider, die sich nicht von dem umständlichen Upgrade-Prozess abschrecken lassen, werden laut Microsoft nicht von Build 10572 enttäuscht sein, da die aktuellste Vorschauversion diverse Fehlerbehebungen und mehrere neue Features mitbringt. Im Folgenden erst einmal die Auflistung der wichtigsten Neuerungen:Wie bereits weiter oben im Text erwähnt und üblich für diese Windows 10 Mobile Previews beinhaltet der neue Build 10572 auch wieder eine Reihe von Bugfixes und Performance-Optimierungen. Beispielsweise soll Cortana im Hintergrund nicht länger einen erhöhten Akku-Verbrauch aufweisen, App-Downloads werden nicht mehr blockiert, der Annäherungssensor funktioniert nun ordnungsgemäß und das Action Center soll ab sofort zügiger regieren.

Der neueste Build wäre allerdings keine Preview, wenn er nicht auch wieder eine Reihe bekannter Probleme beziehungsweise Bugs mitbringen würde. Zu diesen gehören unter anderem, dass Fotos nicht über Drittanbieter-Apps mit anderen geteilt werden können oder dass auf einigen Geräten die Telefon-App einfach nicht starten will. Angetrieben wird das Gerät von einem Intel Core i7 Prozessoren der 5. Generation, dem 8 Gigabyte RAM und eine 1 Terabyte fassende Hybrid-Festplatte (SHDD) zur Seite stehen. Genau wie es diverse Leaks andeuteten, ist das One A9 auf den ersten Blick ein waschechter iPhone-6-Klon, bringt aber laut Hersteller ganz eigene Design-Innovationen mit. Wichtig ist außerdem, dass auf dem Gerät ab Werk das neue Android 6.0 Marshmallow läuft, dem HTC zudem eine aktualisierte Version der hauseigenen Sense-Oberfläche spendiert hat.

Genau wie ältere Modelle der One-M-Reihe und eben die iPhone 6 beziehungsweise 6s Familie verfügt das One A9 über ein Aluminium-Unibody-Chassis. Dieses ist in seiner Form allerdings eindeutig von Apples aktuellen Smartphones inspiriert bis hin zum sich leicht von der Rückseite abhebenden Kameramodul oder der Platzierung eines einzelnen Mono-Lautsprechers an der Unterseite. Nichtsdestotrotz hat HTC aber Feinheiten wie beispielsweise die Antennenanordnung oder die Rundungen an den Displayseiten nach eigenen Vorstellungen umgesetzt. Die Dicke des One A9 gibt das taiwanische Unternehmen mit 7,2 Millimeter, das Gewicht mit 143 Gramm an. Das Display ist mit einer Bilddiagonale von 5 Zoll größer als das des iPhone 6/6s, löst mit Full HD (1920 x 1080 Pixel) auf und verwendet AMOLED-Technik.

Lange wird die Mittelklasse allerdings offenbar nicht unbesetzt bleiben im neuen Lumia-Portfolio. Zumindest hat WinBeta jüngst ein offiziell wirkendes Presse-Bild von einem vierten, bislang unbekannten Modell veröffentlicht, das als Lumia 650 auf den Markt kommen könnte.

Lumia 950 & 950 XL: Microsofts neue Flaggschiff-Smartphones mit Windows 10 Den Angaben von WinBeta nach trägt das Smartphone auf dem durchgesickerten Foto bei Microsoft intern den Codenamen „Saana". Auf die offizielle Bezeichnung Lumia 650 deutet die Uhrzeit (6:50) in der rechten oberen Bildschirmecke hin. Auf den Pressefotos des Lumia 950 und des Lumia 550 ist es jedenfalls so, dass dargestellte Uhrzeit auch der Modellnummer entspricht.Abgesehen von diesen Hinweisen auf die offizielle Bezeichnung, den Codenamen Saana und das Foto gibt es bislang leider noch keine genaueren Informationen zu dem mysteriösen Lumia-Smartphone. Es muss also erst mal abgewartet werden bis hoffentlich bald neue Details und erste Hinweise auf einen möglichen Veröffentlichungstermin auftauchen. Wir sind jedenfalls gespannt, ob wir hier den ersten Blick auf einen würdigen Nachfolger für das Lumia 640 werfen konnten. Dieses im Frühjahr 2015 vorgestellte Windows Phone 8.1 Gerät verfügt über ein 5 Zoll großes HD-Display, einen Quad-Core-Prozessor vom Typ Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 und 1 Gigabyte RAM.

Sowohl OS X 10.11.1 für Macs als auch watchOS 2.0.1 für die Apple Watch bringt diverse Fehlerkorrekturen mit.Das erste größere Update für das seit 30. September erhältliche OS X 10.11 El Capitan kann von Mac-Nutzern wie gewohnt über den Mac App Store heruntergeladen werden. Es beinhaltet laut Apple Anpassungen, die die Stabilität, Kompatibilität und Sicherheit des Betriebssystems verbessern. Des Weiteren werden genau wie in iOS 9.1 über 150 neue Emoji mitgeliefert.Die erste Aktualisierung für watchOS 2 kommt wie eingangs erwähnt mit mehreren Bugfixes daher, das Wichtigste dürfte für Nutzer der Apple Watch aber sein, dass mit watchOS 2.0.1 die sporadisch auftretenden Probleme mit der Akkulaufzeit vorbei sein sollten.

Wie bei der Apple Watch üblich, kann der Download von watchOS 2.0.1 über die Apple Watch App auf einem iPhone initiiert werden. Das Update ist rund 63 Megabyte groß. Analog zu OS X 10.11.1 und iOS 9.1 beinhaltet es auch Unterstützung für über 150 neue Emoji.Darüber hinaus gibt Apple in den Release Noteszu watchOS 2.0.1 unter anderem diese spezifischen Änderungen an:Microsoft ist derzeit dabei, die Arbeiten am ersten großen Update für Windows 10, Codename Threshold 2, abzuschließen. Laut dem stets in Sachen Microsoft gut informierten Paul Thurrott wird der Redmonder Softwareriese die fertige Aktualisierung ab Anfang November 2015 an Windows 10 Nutzer ausliefern.Anders als die derzeit für Teilnehmer am Windows 10 Insider Programm erhältlichen Vorschauversionen wird das sogenannte „Windows 10 November 2015 Update" den Informationen von Thurrott nach nicht all vollständig neuer Build ausgerollt werden, sondern ganz klassisch als kumulatives Aktualisierungspaket. Allerdings soll sich Windows 10 inklusive des Herbst-Updates dann mit der neuen Versionsnummer 1511 zu erkennen geben, um eine deutliche Unterscheidung zur ursprünglichen RTM-Version vom vergangenen Juli zuzulassen.

Die Installation des großen Updates soll auf Windows 10 Geräten wie die anderer Aktualisierungen oder Sicherheitspatches in gewohnter Weise über Windows Update im Hintergrund erfolgen. Wer in Zukunft einen PC mit Windows 7 oder 8.1 auf Windows 10 upgraden will, der wird laut Thurrott gleich die neue Version 1511 des Betriebssystems erhalten.Wie bereits in der jüngsten Insider Preview zu sehen ist, wird das Herbst-Update Änderungen für den Aktivierungsprozess von Windows 10 mitbringen. Unter anderem kann Windows 10 künftig auch mit einem gültigen Produktschlüssel für Windows 7, 8 oder 8.1 aktiviert werden. Bislang war es so, dass Windows 10 die Aktivierung entweder automatisch beim Upgrade von Windows 7/8.1 aus vornahm oder diese ausschließlich mit einem neuen Windows 10 Key durchgeführt werden konnte. Nutzer mit gültiger Windows 7/8 Lizenz, bei denen die automatische Aktivierung fehlschlug, standen daher vor einem Problem.

Zu den weiteren Neuerungen zählen eine Reihe von Verbesserungen für die Benutzeroberfläche, die wohl eigentlich schon in der RTM-Fassung von Windows 10 hätten enthalten sein sollen. Dazu zählen unter anderem farbige Titelleisten für Desktop-Anwendungen, überarbeitete Kontextmenüs und eine zusätzliche Spalte für die Live Tiles im Startmenü. Davon abgesehen wird Microsoft mit dem Update eine neue Nachrichten und Skype Video App ausliefern, die die Messaging-Plattform Skype tief ins System integrieren.Schließlich wird das Herbst-Update für Windows 10 auch etwas Feintuning für den noch sehr jungen Browser Edge sowie Verbesserungen für den digitalen Assistenten Cortana beinhalten. Mit Hilfe von Cortana können demnächst beispielsweise auch SMS von einem Windows 10 PC aus verschickt werden, vorausgesetzt der Nutzer ist sowohl auf dem Rechner als auch auf einem Windows 10 Mobile Smartphone mit demselben Microsoft-Konto angemeldet. Was im Übrigen auch das November-Update nicht liefern wird, ist die von Microsoft versprochene Unterstützung für Erweiterungen in Edge. Dieses Feature soll jetzt erst im nächsten Jahr nachgereicht werden.

Von den Neuerungen der aktuellen Windows 10 Insider Preview werden sich schon bald alle Windows 10 Nutzer einen Eindruck machen können. Wie ein US-Publizist mit besten Kontakten in Microsoft-Kreise verrät, wird der Redmoner Softwareriese Anfang November ein großes Herbst-Update für das im vergangenen Juli erschienene PC-Betriebssystem veröffentlichen. Dieses soll unter anderem Verbesserungen für die Benutzeroberfläche und den Browser Edge mitbringen.Es ist derzeit noch nicht bekannt, wann Microsoft plant, sein Anfang Oktober angekündigtes Surface Book in Deutschland auf den Markt zu bringen. Da das innovative Convertible-Notebook aber in wenigen Tagen in den USA erhältlich sein wird und die US-Presse bereits Testexemplare zur Verfügung gestellt bekommen hat, gibt es von dort nun neue Erkenntnisse zu den technischen Spezifikationen. Besonders interessant sind die Infos über die in den teureren Modellvarianten verbaute Nvidia-GPU.

Die diskrete Grafikeinheit des Surface Book gab zunächst einige Rätsel auf. Microsoft sprach bei der offiziellen Enthüllung des 2-in-1-Laptops lediglich von einer Nvidia-GPU mit GDDR5-VRAM. Die bei PC-Enthusiasten bestens bekannte US-Publikation Anandtech hat nun aber mit Hilfe eines Testgeräts und dem bekannten Tool GPU-Z die wichtigsten Einzelheiten über den Grafikchip in Erfahrung bringen können. Es handelt sich dabei um eine GPU mit Maxwell-Architektur vom Typ GM108, deren Spezifikationen im Grunde einer GeForce 940M entsprechen. Wie auf dem GPU-Z-Screenshot von Anandtech klar zu sehen ist, besitzt der Chip 384 Rechenkerne, die mit einer Taktfrequenz von 954 bis 993 Megahertz arbeiten, und ist über ein 64 Bit breites Speicherinterface an ein Gigabyte GDDR5-RAM angebunden. Die Art des verwendeten Speichers ist auch der einzige nennenswerte Unterschied zwischen der speziellen Surface Book GPU und einer normalen GeForce 940M, da letztgenannte von Nvidia ausschließlich mit 2 Gigabyte DDR3-RAM ausgeliefert wird.

Aufgrund des schnelleren GDDR5-Speichers verfügt die dedizierte Grafikeinheit des Surface Book über eine höhere Datentransferrate als eine Standard-940M, was die Spezialanfertigung auch ein gutes Stück flotter machen sollte. Aufgrund Microsofts Entscheidung für nur 1 Gigabyte VRAM bleibt aber abzuwarten, wie gut die Performance im Alltagseinsatz tatsächlich ist. Anandtechs erste Benchmark sind diesbezüglich schon mal vielversprechend, wenn auch nicht so spektakulär wie das Microsofts Präsentation suggerierte. Ein waschechtes Gaming-Notebook im äußerst kompakten Gehäuse darf im Surface Book somit selbstverständlich nicht gesehen werden.Der besagten Nvidia-Grafikeinheit steht in den teureren Modellvarianten des Surface Book ein Intel Core i5 oder Core i7 Prozessor der 6. Generation (Skylake) mit einer TDP von 15 Watt zur Seite. Die Grundkonfiguration gibt es auch ohne dediziertem Grafikchip. Darüber hinaus bietet das Convertible bis zu 16 Gigabyte RAM und eine schnelle PCIe-SSD mit Kapazitäten von bis zu 1 Terabyte.

Apple hat heute Abend iOS 9.1 zum Download freigegeben. Es ist das erste große Update für das im September veröffentlichte iOS 9 und insgesamt die dritte Aktualisierung. Eine Beta von iOS 9.1 konnte von Entwicklern und freiwilligen Testern seit mehr als einem Monat ausprobiert werden. Zu den Neuerungen zählen einige Fehlerbehebungen, Performance-Optimierungen und Verbesserungen sowie die Unterstützung für kommende Apple-Hardware.iOS 9.1 wird von Apple ab sofort als sogenannte OTA-Update drahtlos verteilt, kann aber auch über iTunes auf einem Mac oder PC heruntergeladen werden. Unterstützt werden alle iPhone, iPad und iPod touch Modelle, auf denen auch iOS 9 läuft.Die deutlich ersichtlichen Änderungen von iOS 9.1 halten sich in Grenzen. Unter anderem hat Apple seinem aktuellen Betriebssystem Unterstützung für Unicode 7 und 8 spendiert und damit auch gleich eine Reihe neuer Emoji hinzugefügt. What's even stranger is how the battery indicator light is only found inside the case while most other battery cases have the indicator light on the exterior. Part of what makes the case "smart," however, is that it's linked with your phone so you can check the case's battery charge through by waking your phone's display. It's an OK solution, but why not just have the lights outside?

It's surprising to see Apple put so much effort into its accessories only to be outdone by third-party competitors like Mophie and Logitech.They're not terrible products, but they compromise too much: the Magic Mouse should be able to charge while it's still in use, and the new iPhone Smart Battery Case looks so awkward that you'll wish Apple had just made the iPhone slightly thicker in the first place in order to give you more battery life. As a tentpole for innovation, it's surprising this is the best Apple can do.Microsoft has released an update for the Surface Book and Surface Pro but failed to fix many of the issues users have had with the laptop and tablet, according to a blog post from Paul Thurrot.Thurrot, one of the most well-respected Microsoft bloggers, recently coined the term "Surfacegate" for the issues facing Surface users, which include faulty screens, poor software performance, and a recall of chargers because they pose a fire risk. "Microsoft has maintained complete radio silence on the rampant reliability issues that dog Surface Book and Surface Pro 4," Thurrot wrote.

The new update doesn't fix these issues, however. According to a Microsoft blog post, the update fixes a battery issue, a Wi-Fi issue, improves the detection of the Surface keyboard, and improve the stability of the graphics on a small number of Book laptops. "Today, Microsoft has finally delivered something—anything—for beleaguered Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 users who are happy to accept even a partial fix for the many issues they are seeing," Thurrot writes. "And this does appear to be a partial fix: There's no hint that any of this will fix the single biggest issue, which is related to the new power management states that come from Skylake," he continued.The power management issue means the Surface loses a lot of battery during sleep, when it should lose none. Other Surface users took to Twitter to complain that the software update did not fix many of the issues they have with the Surface. Microsoft released a new, high-end version of the Surface Book and Pro recently and recently published a blog post entitled "Surfacing the Facts" which, as Thurrot notes, "has to do with the already-explained Surface/NFL incident from last weekend," rather than addressing the issues users face.

Business Insider has reached out to Microsoft to ask when the issues will be fixed. We will update the post when we hear back. In each of the past three years, Microsoft has made the same bold claim: The Surface is the perfect replacement for your laptop and your tablet, a dreamy all-in-one miracle device.But I've never agreed with Microsoft. Even though the Surface technically had a lot of laptop and tablet features, it didn't execute them particularly well. The track pad and keyboard felt cheap and unresponsive. There weren't great apps to use in tablet mode. And Windows 8 was a disaster.On Tuesday, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Book, a laptop with a clever hinge that lets you detach the screen from the keyboard and use it as a tablet. This is the kind of computer I've been waiting for, something that can do it all without compromising design or usability.It's light and powerful, has incredible battery life, and looks good to boot. I spent about 15 minutes playing around with a Surface Book after Microsoft's event in New York on Tuesday, and I can tell the company is on to something. This is the device Microsoft should have originally launched when it began making the Surface three years ago.

It's also a blow to Apple, which recently unveiled its own take on a Surface-like device with the iPad Pro. I used the iPad Pro briefly at Apple's launch event a few weeks ago, and I wasn't exactly blown away. It feels like a niche product whose appeal will mainly be to people like graphics artists. The keyboard cover wasn't that great either. It felt cheaply made and was difficult to type on, as with the original Surface.The Surface Book feels much more refined. Though it's technically a laptop-tablet hybrid, it's the first in the category that doesn't feel like one. It's a laptop when you need it, or a big-screen tablet when you need it. There aren't any obvious compromises as there are with other Surfaces.(By the way, Microsoft did announce another new Surface, the Surface Pro 4, which looks like an updated version of what we've seen before. I'm not into it.)To be clear, these are only first impressions. Microsoft made some bold claims Tuesday, saying the Surface Book was 50% more powerful than the MacBook Pro. We'll have to wait and see about that.

Whereas most sub-$700 notebooks — Chromebooks aside — are chunky and meant for a desk, the Zenbook comes off like a budget-friendly MacBook Air, measuring just under 0.5 inches thick and weighing 2.6 pounds. It’s as attractive and portable as you’ll get for the money, and it’s supplemented by ample specs: a 13.3-inch 1080p IPS display, a 256GB solid state drive, 8GB of RAM, and a decent 9 or so hours of battery life. And since Microsoft sells it as a Signature Edition device, it comes with a bloat-free version of Windows 10.The only major hangup with this particular model is its Intel Core m3-6Y30 processor. It’s a sixth-gen chip, but a Core m, while improved, is still generally less powerful than a Core i3 in practice. It is capable of getting things done, but gaming is a reach, and you don’t want to push too hard with media editing. For everyday browsing and less professional desktop apps, though, it’s competent. Not bad at all, just closer to what you'd expect for the money.

If you want this design with a more powerful chip, you can pay up for a Core i5-packing Zenbook UX305LA, but at that point you’re a ways away from the budget range. If you need something a little bit stronger, there’s the $550 Acer Aspire E5-573G, but then you’re doubling the thickness and weight. Despite the novel name, VAVA's Voom speaker has gotten quite a bit of buzz on both YouTube and Amazon.Since its release last November, reviewers on Amazon have praised the Voom's sound quality, specifically the bass response. That bass comes courtesy of the speaker's large-for-its-size subwoofer.All of the Voom's controls are on top of the unit, including its power, Bluetooth pairing, and play/pause button. There's also an EQ button that lets you cycle through "normal", "party", and "surround" modes. Party mode adds even more bass into the mix, while surround mode simulates a surround-sound experience with the Voom's three speaker and two passive radiator system.One reviewer mentioned that you can pair multiple devices with the Voom simultaneously, so switching between streaming music from your phone and a movie's soundtrack from your laptop won't require you to sync every time. Those with NFC-enabled devices can also pair with the speaker that way.

VAVA pegs the battery life of the Voom at 10 hours, and reviewers have mentioned getting around that much juice out of it, less if they choose to charge a device through the USB port on the back of the speaker. For charging, you can plug the speaker into the wall, or charge over micro USB. Charging through an outlet will be substantially faster, but having the ability to recharge the Voom over micro USB is a nice touch.Ultimately you'll have to trust your ears, but for under $100, the VAVA Voom seems like a solid choice for a Bluetooth speaker, delivering good sound with a couple of neat extras. While the Surface Pro 4 is an iterative update to the Surface Pro 3, the Book is an entirely new machine. It's a laptop but with tablet qualities, such as a large touch screen. Apple hasn't been wresting on its hardware laurels, however. The company introduced a brand new iPad Pro back in September and has recently updated both the MacBook Air and Pro with new internals, placing them at the front of the market. Both companies are vying for similar customers: those who want the flexibility of a light-weight device (such as a tablet or ultra-thin PC) with the power of a larger machine. All models have exceptional battery life — 10 hours or more — but in other areas they vary wildly. It seems pretty clear that 2017 is going to be the year that Amazon's Alexa virtual assistant really begins to hit its stride, going from a fast-growing niche product to a mainstream must-have.While Microsoft and especially Google have made their competitive strategies clear — even Samsung and Baidu have started to make rumbles in the market — there's one elephant that, notably, isn't in the room yet: Apple, the most valuable company in the world and a notorious latecomer to any new product category.

While Apple recently built Siri into the Apple TV, the company is said to be working on a direct competitor to the Amazon Echo — one that would apparently be more advanced than anything we've seen, down to a possible facial-recognition camera so it knows who's talking. That device, if and when it comes out, would bring Apple's 5-year-old Siri assistant head-to-head with Alexa.And the clock is ticking. Every Alexa-compatible Echo speaker, lightbulb, thermostat, refrigerator, and car that people buy today they probably won't replace for many years, meaning the critical market for early adopters is already self-selecting outside of whatever Apple has up its sleeve.Meanwhile, Wall Street is worried as ever that Apple is falling way behind as computing moves past the touch screen and into augmented reality, virtual reality, and yeah, artificially intelligent voice-powered assistants like the Echo. It doesn't help that sales of Apple's all-important iPhone are showing signs of sagging.But when Apple introduced its AirPods wireless earphones in September, it also took the lid off of the W1 chip, a little technology for improving Bluetooth audio that lays the groundwork for Apple's next big thing. It's already here, and it's going to make a big splash in the months and years to come.

The W1 chip is Apple's new technology for making Bluetooth a lot more user-friendly. It debuted on the AirPods ($159) and the Beats Solo3 Wireless ($299) headphones, both available now.In many ways, the AirPods, Beats Solo3, and other W1 devices are standard Bluetooth headsets. They'll work with any Android phone, Windows PC, or Blackberry you might happen to have lying around, the same way Bluetooth gadgetry always has.But the magic happens when you're using a W1 headset with an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac.First, you turn it on next to your unlocked iPhone or iPad. Second, you click "connect." Now they're automatically paired with any other Apple gadget that's signed in to your iCloud account. Switching from iPhone to Mac and back takes a click.Apple's W1 confers other benefits, too. When you're using it with an Apple gadget, the chip grants tremendous range — with the Beats Solo3, I was able to vacuum my entire small house with my phone charging in the bedroom without losing audio. Better yet, W1 uses some kind of magic optimization technique to greatly extend battery life.The next W1 device we know about is the long-delayed BeatsX fitness earbuds. Going into 2017, expect a lot more W1-powered headphones to hit the market, most — if not all — manufactured by Apple and its Beats subsidiary.

The W1 does something crucial for Apple right off the bat: It provides something cool, different, and convenient in a way that requires you to own all kinds of Apple gadgetry. Not only has the W1's it-just-works experience swayed me from considering an Android phone, it also caused me to spend considerably more time on my Mac after a year and a half on Microsoft's Windows 10.It means Apple has something that no Android phone — or Windows laptop, for that matter — can match. It also opens the door for a world where people are always wearing their headphones, with Apple's Siri only a tap away.This, in turn, means that Apple's competitor to the omnipresent Alexa is hiding in plain sight — in the iPhones and iPads that more than a billion people own and in the wireless headphones that Apple is so keen to push. In other words, the W1 brings together all the pieces of the Apple puzzle, from Siri to Beats to the iPhone, in a way that hasn't been done before.There are hurdles ahead, though. Siri can handle basic tasks just fine, but because Apple has been so cautious with its nascent smart-home strategy, it's not as great a hub for home appliances and the like as Amazon's Alexa ecosystem. Still, Siri boasts compatibility with high-profile apps like Uber, Venmo, Skype, and your phone's messages app so it can read you your texts.

And as a nice bonus for Apple, Siri currently can control only the Apple Music streaming service and your downloaded music. In a weird way, the push toward voice controls seems likely to have a nice spillover effect for Apple's subscription services as people look for the best and easiest integrations with their new setups. I'm going to call my shot right here based on these factors: Apple's Echo competitor, whenever it arrives, won't have Siri built in, but rather will use Bluetooth and the W1 chip to connect directly to your iPhone and call Siri from there. It would look like the Amazon Echo or Google Home but use the W1's insane range to link to your phone from anywhere in your house. This would accomplish Apple's goal of requiring you to have an iPhone to use its best stuff.Looking further ahead, if Apple is indeed working on augmented reality, as everyone thinks it is, Siri could be your holographic assistant, with your W1-enabled headphones acting as the way you talk to it. After all, if you're going to hold a conversation with imaginary computer people, you wouldn't want to type your answers.

And, hey, if you want to get really weird with it, Apple's long-rumored, not-soon-to-be-released car would be a great vehicle (pun intended) to get W1 going in the car.The iPhone, iPad, new Macs, and Apple TV look great, but it's a different case when you look at the new line of accessories the company launched in 2015.First, there was the new Magic Mouse 2, which was announced in October. The charging port was placed on the bottom of the mouse. That makes it essentially useless when you're charging it.For a company that rarely sacrifices function for form, this was a bizarre choice. And the pundits on Twitter didn't let up: Then there's the new Apple Pencil, the optional $99 Stylus that works with the big-screen iPad Pro. It looks fine on its own, but things get really weird when you charge it by plugging it directly into the iPad's Lightning port. PCMag's Sascha Segan said that plugging in the Pencil directly into the iPad Pro feels "a little precarious; the Pencil sticks out of your iPad Pro in a way that feels like it might break off."

And if you don't want your iPad Pro look like some sort of medieval weapon while you're charging your Apple Pencil, you're forced to use another questionable design choice. The iPad Pro also comes with a tiny, easy-to-lose dongle that'll let you plug the Pencil into the wall just like the iPhone. Bizarre.The Pencil wasn't the only problem with the iPad Pro though. There was also the Smart Keyboard, which costs $179 and got pretty poor reviews. It's unattractive and doesn't let you prop your iPad up at different angles. It's also a pain to type on. Apple may be pitching the iPad Pro as a replacement for your laptop, but that's impossible to do with such a poorly designed keyboard.Finally, Apple unveiled a whole new wave of criticism with the launch of the iPhone 6s Smart Battery Case. The case has a built-in battery and gives your iPhone a few extra hours of juice.

Laut Nowhereelse.fr wurde die Aufnahme in einem Werk von Apples Zulieferer Catcher gemacht und zeigt die Rückseite des kommenden iPhone-Modells.Wie meist bei solchen Fotos lässt sich derzeit nicht verifizieren, ob es tatsächlich authentisch ist. Falls es sich bei dem Objekt darauf aber um eine Komponente des iPhone 7 handelt, können dadurch ein paar Rückschlüsse auf die neuen Design-Ansätze und Ausstattungsmerkmale des Smartphones gezogen werden. Auffälligster Unterschied zur Chassis-Konstruktion des iPhone 6 beziehungsweise iPhone 6s wäre demnach die veränderte Unterbringung der Antennenstreifen im Gehäuse. Während diese bei den Vorgängern deutlich sichtbar quer über die Rückseite verlaufen, sind sie beim iPhone 7 offenbar direkt in den oberen und unteren Gehäuserand integriert. Nowhereelse.fr hat freundlicherweise auch gleich ein Render-Bild erstellt, das zeigen soll, wie das fertige Gerät auf Grundlage dieser Erkenntnis aussehen könnte.

Ein weiteres Detail, das auf dem geleakten Foto ins Auge sticht, ist die Aussparung für das Kameramodul. Diese fällt größer aus als beispielsweise beim iPhone 6s und rückt etwas näher an den Gehäuserand. Außerdem wird in der Bildbeschreibung erwähnt, dass das Gehäuse etwas dünner sei als beim aktuellen Topmodell - wobei aber keine exakten Maße genannt werden - und dass das iPhone 7 wie schon seit längerem spekuliert keinen 3,5 Millimeter Kopfhöreranschluss zu bieten habe. Älteren Meldungen nach soll dies dem besonders schlanken Chassis und dem Einsatz von Stereolautsprechern geschuldet sein. Einen wirklich überzeugenden Beweis dafür gibt es aber nach wie vor nicht.Alles in allem kann festgehalten werden, dass trotz jeder Menge Berichte wirklich verlässliche Informationen zum iPhone 7 derzeit noch Mangelware sind. Sofern sich das Foto von Nowhereelse.fr aber als echt herausstellen sollte und Apple das Gehäuse-Design bis zur offiziellen Präsentation nicht mehr grundlegend verändert, würden die visuellen Unterschiede zwischen iPhone 7 und iPhone 6 beziehungsweise 6s sehr gering ausfallen.

Google feiert den ersten Geburtstag des Google Stores mit einer Rabattaktion für das Nexus 5X und das Nexus 6P. Beide Android 6.0 Marshmallow Smartphones sind somit erneut für einen begrenzten Zeitraum mit einem Preisnachlass von 80 beziehungsweise 100 Euro erhältlich. Zusätzlich gesteigert wird die Anziehungskraft der aktuellen Nexus-Geräte durch ein neues, leistungsverbesserndes Update.Google sorgt derzeit nicht nur mit der ersten Android N Developer Preview für Aufsehen, sondern feiert auch den ersten Jahrestag der Eröffnung des Google Stores mit einem temporäreren Preisnachlass auf seine aktuellen Smartphones Nexus 5X und Nexus 6P. Das recht handliche Nexus 5X ist im Onlineshop des Internetriesen somit aktuell in allen Farb- und Speichervarianten um 80 Euro günstiger beziehungsweise ab 349 Euro zu bekommen, beim größeren Nexus 6P kann sogar noch etwas mehr gespart werden. Dank eines Preisnachlasses von 100 Euro auf ebenfalls alle Farb- und Speichervarianten lässt sich das High-End-Modell derzeit ab 549 Euro erwerben. Die Rabattaktion von Google läuft noch bis zum 27. Passend zur aktuellen Promotion hat Google vor kurzem fast schon heimlich, still und leise sowohl für das Nexus 5X als auch das Nexus 6P ein wichtiges Softwareupdate veröffentlicht. Auf beiden Smartphone ändert sich dadurch zwar nichts an der Android-Versionsnummer, - die bleibt bei Android 6.0.1 -aber die Google-Ingenieure haben den Modellen neben Sicherheitsflicken auch Leistungsverbesserungen und Fehlerkorrekturen spendiert. Durch den Aktualisierungsprozess ändert sich die Build-Nummer des Nexus 5X von MMB29V auf MHC19J, und die des Nexus 6P von MMB29V auf MHC19I.Allzu viele Details gibt Google nicht preis, wenn es darum geht, die Änderungen zu beschreiben, die die Software-Updates für beide Smartphones mitbringen. Klar ist, dass sowohl beim Nexus 5X als auch beim Nexus 6P an der allgemeinen Systemperformance geschraubt, und Verbesserungen für die Konnektivität sowie Mobilfunkanbieter-spezifischen Optimierungen implementiert wurden. Für erfahrene Android-Anwender besteht alternativ die Möglichkeit, ein Factory Image der aktuellsten Systemsoftware für die Nexus-Smartphones direkt von Googles Servern herunterzuladen und dieses manuell zu installieren.Microsoft hat für Windows Insider im Fast Ring eine neue Vorschauversion von Windows 10 Mobile veröffentlicht. Build 14283 kann beispielsweise auf aktuellen Lumia-Modellen wie dem Lumia 550 oder dem Lumia 950 installiert werden und bringt eine lange Liste an Fehlerkorrekturen sowie einige sichtbare Neuerungen mit. Wie von derartigen Preview-Fassungen gewohnt, gibt es aber auch wieder bekannte Probleme.

Microsoft hat kurz nach Veröffentlichung eines Sammel-Updates für alle aktuellen Windows 10 Mobile Geräte nun auch eine frische Insider Build seiner Mobil-Plattform für Tester im Fast Ring veröffentlicht. Build 14283 entstammt dem neueren Redstone-Entwicklungszweig und lässt sich auf den Modellen Lumia 550, 650, Lumia 950, 950 XL sowie Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL installieren und auch das Xiaomi Mi4 ist geeignet.Laut den Angaben auf dem Windows Blog sollen künftig auch Insider mit älteren Lumia Modellen die brandaktuellen Redstone-Builds ausprobieren können, allerdings will Microsoft zuvor erst einmal das lang erwartete offizielle Upgrade auf Windows 10 Mobile für diese Gerätegruppe ausliefern. Wann der Aktualisierungsprozess endlich anlaufen soll, wird aber leider nicht verraten. Aktuellen Gerüchten nach soll es noch im März soweit sein.

Wirklich dramatische Neuerungen bringt die Build 14283 von Windows 10 Mobile nicht mit, aber ein paar der Ergänzungen dürften für Tester durchaus relevant sein. So hat Microsoft an der Telefon-App geschraubt und ihr Indikatoren für verpasste Anrufe sowie erhaltene Voicemails spendiert. Innerhalb der App informiert jetzt neben dem entsprechenden Tab-Symbol eine kleine Ziffer über die Anzahl der entgangenen Telefonanrufe oder der noch nicht abgehörten Voicemails.Ebenfalls überarbeitet hat das Entwicklerteam Outlook Mail und Calender. In Outlook Mail kann nun die Textvorschau in der Nachrichtenliste deaktiviert werden und unerwünschte Werbe-Mails lassen sich schnell mit Hilfe eines Kontextmenübefehls in den Junk-Ordner verschieben.Noch nicht sichtbar für Insider umgesetzt, aber bereits angekündigt hat Microsoft außerdem Änderungen für die Apps Insider Hub und Feedback. Die beiden Apps werden in kommenden Mobile- und Desktop-Builds von Windows 10 miteinander zum Feedback Hub verschmelzen. In der neuen App sollen dann Anwender nicht nur die Möglichkeit haben, Feedback-Beitrage hoch zu voten, sondern auch unter den Beiträgen Kommentare zu verfassen.

Apple hat nun ganz offiziell Einladungsschreiben für ein Event am Montag, den 21. März 2016 an Pressevertreter versandt. Die Veranstaltung wird auf dem altehrwürdigen Apple Campus, Infinite Loop 1, im kalifornischen Cupertino abgehalten werden, wie unter anderem BuzzFeed informiert. Beginn der Keynote, die auch diesmal wieder weltweit via Internet als Livestream übertragen werden wird, ist 19 Uhr deutscher Zeit.Die Gerüchteküche spekulierte Monate lang wild darüber, was Apple Anfang 2016 vorstellen könnte, anhand mehrerer konkreter Leaks haben wir aber seit ein paar Wochen eine sehr genaue Vorstellung von den kommenden Produkten – zumindest einigen. Als Event-Highlights gelten ein neues 9,7 Zoll iPad, das zur erst gegen Ende des vergangenen Jahres eingeführten iPad Pro Reihe gehören soll, sowie ein brandneues 4 Zoll Smartphone namens iPhone SE oder iPhone 5SE, das auf den ersten Blick aussehen könnte wie das iPhone 5s, jedoch überwiegend die Hardware des aktuellen iPhone 6s bieten soll.

Laut den Insiderinformationen wird sich eine weitere Ankündigung des Apple-Events um neue Armbänder für die Apple Watch und eventuell aktualisierte Software für die smarte Armbanduhr drehen. Ein vollkommen überarbeitetes Apple Watch Modell dürfte es im Frühjahr 2016 allerdings noch nicht zu sehen geben. Was hingegen in gewisser Weise überfällig ist, das ist die Vorstellung einer neuen MacBook, MacBook Air und MacBook Pro Generation. Die passenden Intel Skylake Prozessoren sind spätestens jetzt gut verfügbar und Apple hat das superflache MacBook mit 12 Zoll Retina Display sowie die aktuellen Ausführungen des MacBook Air und des MacBook Pro mit 13 Zoll Retina Display vor ziemlich genau einem Jahr angekündigt. Das MacBook Pro mit 15 Zoll Retina Display wurde zwar im Mai 2015 einer kleinen Auffrischung unterzogen, aber Apple verbaut darin nach wie vor die gut zwei Jahre alten Intel Haswell Prozessoren. Gegen eine unmittelbar bevorstehende Ankündigung einer verbesserten MacBook-Familie spricht nur, dass es derzeit keine wirklich ernstzunehmenden Gerüchte oder gar Leaks zu dem Thema gibt.

Auch wenn die großen Event-Highlights bereits festzustehen scheinen, könnte Apple also die ein oder andere Produktankündigung bis jetzt geheim gehalten haben. Ganz genau werden wir das aber wohl erst in zehn Tagen wissen. Wie dem auch sei, in jedem Fall wird das Event am 21. März für alle Interessierten sowohl über Apple TV als auch direkt auf Apples Webseite im Livestream zu verfolgen sein. Wir werden außerdem natürlich über alle Neuvorstellungen im Detail informieren.Apple hat die Spekulationen endgültig beendet und den Termin für das nächste Event offiziell bekannt gegeben. Am 21. März 2016 wird das kalifornische Unternehmen neue Produkte präsentieren. Das entsprechende Einladungsschreiben an Pressevertreter enthält leider keine bedeutenden Hinweise darauf, was an dem Tag gezeigt werden wird, die Gerüchteküche rechnet aber mit einem neuen 4 Zoll iPhone und 9,7 Zoll iPad Pro.

Steve Jobs' return to Apple sparked a major cultural shift within the company: to stay focused on a small number of products and make those products extremely polished.Jobs and Jony Ive, the head of Apple's design team, were in charge of preserving this core mission — to remain minimalist — while ensuring Apple's products, business, and marketing all aligned with this idea.Apple enjoyed unprecedented success as a result. The iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad all took the world by storm and changed the way people interacted with technology. Apple became the largest and most valuable company in the world.But Jobs died in 2011 of complications from pancreatic cancer, and in the five years since it looks as if Ive, his partner and spiritual equal, has been less and less present at Apple. Many believe Ive has one foot out the door.Judging by what Apple has done this year — both purposefully and accidentally — there's reason to worry about an Apple without both Jobs and Ive. Today, Apple sells about 46 models of its various hardware products, from phones to tablets to watches and computers and beyond. But more important than the sheer number of products is the number of legitimate complaints about these products.

The iPhone. Many iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s owners are complaining about a bug that essentially shuts down the phone even when it has a lot of battery life left. This is a problem that is happening right now, and yet, Apple hasn't figured out the true cause or at minimum hasn't disclosed it to the public. Apple has a replacement program, but it doesn't appear to cover all of those people affected by this bug. Apple employees say it's a real problem at its retail stores.The MacBook Pro. Battery life isn't as long as advertised in the newest model. Apple promised 10 hours, but many people are getting only seven or eight hours of battery life. Also, the new model has no SD card slot, no MagSafe (so your power cord doesn't safely disconnect if someone trips over it), and it costs much more than previous models. Customers and fans are not happy.AirPods. Apple missed the October release window for its first pair of wireless earbuds. They just went on sale last week, but they cost $130 more than Apple's wired earbuds, plus they're ugly to look at and easy to lose. People are better off buying the wired pair.

The Apple Watch. The second-generation model, released in September, is hardly different from the original. It adds water-resistance and a GPS, but it's still a bulky piece of hardware with an ugly interface that's far from intuitive. My colleague Melia Robinson, who reviewed the Apple Watch Series 2, said it had the "worst home screen of any Apple device I've ever owned."The Apple TV. The remote control is just awful. Since it's so small and its touchscreen is so sensitive, the remote 1) gets lost often, and 2) routinely turns on your Apple TV and starts playing random content. It also has too many buttons. It's surprising this got the OK from Apple's design house.So. Many. Dongles. The latest iPhone needs a dongle for headphones. The MacBook needs different dongles for peripherals like SD cards, Lightning connectors, and more. Dongles are one extra thing to carry and one extra thing to misplace. Ugh.It's not just Apple's hardware. Apple's software and services also leave much to be desired — some examples:Siri. Apple had a head-start in the digital assistant game when it introduced Siri as an iPhone 4S exclusive in 2011. But in the five years since, Siri has been left in the dust by competitors like Google Assistant and Amazon's Alexa, in terms of language recognition, cognition, and response time. Siri's competitors can also do more than Apple's AI — and it's frustrating how often Siri gets it wrong. Considering Siri is in almost every Apple product, you'd think the company would put more effort into making Siri a better listener and a better assistant.

iCloud. Apple had a similar head-start in the cloud business when Steve Jobs introduced the service in 2011; and yet, while iCloud is supposed to "just work" — syncing your documents and data between your computers and devices — the interface is still confusing, and the underlying architecture has been unreliable (I've lost many important files in the past due to syncing issues). Its various features, too, feel half-baked: iCloud Photo Library and iCloud Drive both feel needlessly complicated and frustrating to use.Apple Music is still cluttered (despite a face-lift earlier this year), and it's not as easy to discover music from artists you might like. (Spotify remains king in these areas.)iTunes is a mess. There are too many sections and menus for it to be intuitive. Just look at this.The App Store is in disarray and not fun to browse. There's no personalization to it — no recommended apps based on what you've downloaded, just popular apps and picks from Apple — thus making it feel extremely impersonal.Apple's Mail, Weather, News, Wallet, Health, Clock, and Calendarapps could all use some work to compete with better third-party alternatives.

Also worth noting: Marketing was a particular specialty of Jobs': When Jobs was alive, Apple created some of the most iconic ads in the history of advertising, like the "1984" commercial, the "Think Different" campaign, and the iPod silhouette ads. But lately, Apple's ads have been, quite frankly, not as good.You can point to any number of factors — perhaps a lack of originality, or humor, or style — but the bottom line remains: Apple's advertisements from the past five years have not generated the same buzz they used to.(For reference, Apple's two latest ads featured Brad Garrett as Frankenstein's monster and a 30-second clip comparing the new MacBook Pro to the inventions of gravity, fire, and toilet paper — really.)Perhaps Apple's current products are suffering because Apple is focusing on future projects. Apple is reportedly working on smart glasses that can handle augmented and/or virtual reality, as well as a self-driving-car system. Both projects reportedly have "hundreds" of people attached to them ... and both are many years from launching.

On the flip side, there are several current Apple products that feel downright neglected. iTunes is in desperate need of an update, and Apple's three-year-old Mac Pro no longer meets the needs of "pro" customers — it's surprising Apple hasn't given this computer even a minor refresh, just to keep chipsets up-to-date. Many other products need polishing or fixing.The key, as it was when Jobs returned to Apple, is focus: Shrink the number of ongoing projects, and execute them well. That might mean taking a really hard look at some less successful products and cutting them.Apple recently decided to kill its line of WiFi routers — which is a shame, since I own one — but it's a good move, as the company clearly needs more bandwidth for other projects. And Apple needs to do more moves like this.iTunes. I spent over a decade perfecting my music library on iTunes, but with the introductions of Apple Music and the Apple TV, there's really no reason for Apple's multimedia to be housed on such an old platform any longer. Apple should do a wholesale replacement of iTunes with Apple Music and rebrand/spin out the iTunes Store to continue selling digital movies, music, and more.

The MacBook. Apple should consolidate the MacBook Air and MacBook lines, so if you're in the market for a new laptop, you choose either the MacBook Air or the MacBook Pro — one laptop focuses on portability, while the other focuses on professional use. Right now, it's too difficult to differentiate the normal MacBook from the MacBook Air, especially if you ask one of Jobs' favorite questions: "Which one do I tell my friends to buy?"The Apple Watch Edition. Selling an expensive version of the Apple Watch was a good way to create excitement for a new product category, but now that the Apple Watch is over two years old, it's time to kill the Edition watches. Having a design team spend time and energy on a single watch model, which doesn't do anything different from the normal watch, is a waste of resources. I'd rather see a redesigned Apple Watch interface or an Apple Watch that does more things than the basic model, instead of just the same product with an expensive case.

The Self-Driving Car Project 'Titan.' Years ago, Apple CEO Tim Cook reportedly gave his company a green light to build an electric, self-driving car, not unlike Tesla Motors' popular Model S. But recent reports say Apple ran into many issues in its project, lost several key people, and has since pivoted into building a self-driving car system — essentially software that can help cars drive and navigate by themselves, but not necessarily for an Apple-made car. Perhaps it's premature to say Apple's car project isn't worth the sizable effort required, but it sounds as if Apple would otherwise benefit by having more people focused on its core products like the iPhone, the iPad, and Mac computers. Maybe Project Titan just needs time for more technologies to become cheaper or readily available, or maybe Apple is still trying to crystallize its plan. Either way, it's time for Apple to consider abandoning this project — especially since the company has so many other ambitions in other areas, like TV and augmented/virtual reality.

Dongles. I miss the days when Apple products would "just work." Please, Apple, kill the dongles. All of them. Come up with some more clever solutions. Please.We will unfortunately never know whether Jobs would've approved AirPods, or the much-maligned Apple TV "Siri" remote, or the move away from MagSafe power cords and toward USB-C. But the fact is, Apple today has many projects and many problems that need attention. It would be wise of Apple to evaluate these issues and solve them — and give a harder look at the company's many products — before moving onto even more new projects.Dell unveiled a bunch of new laptops and tablets at this year’s Consumer Electronics Showcase, but its new XPS 13 was by far the most impressive.The new 13-inch laptop comes with a 3200 x 1800 resolution display with the slimmest bezels I’ve ever seen on a laptop. There's also a cheaper version with a 1920 x 1080 resolution screen.

Since the bezels are so thin, the laptop actually looks a bit smaller than the MacBook Air although their screens are the same size.The edge-to-edge display really is gorgeous. I didn’t have too much time to play with the laptop, but in the few minutes I used it I noticed how much colors really popped throughout the Windows interface. High resolution photos looked extremely detailed, too.The laptop’s display is obviously its standout feature, but Dell is also claiming that it gets 15 hours of battery life. If true, that would beat the MacBook Air’s lengthy 12-hour battery life by three full hours, but we won’t know for sure until we try it out ourselves.The keyboard felt sturdy and was comfortable to type with, but the MacBook Air’s is still better. The aluminum build on Apple’s MacBooks still provides the most efficient and comfortable typing experience in my opinion, but the new XPS 13's keyboard is still still fairly good. The 13-inch version of Dell's new laptop starts at $799, while the base price for the smaller 11-inch MacBook Air is set at $899. If you're looking for a new high-end Windows laptop with an excellent screen, the Dell XPS 13 seems like a solid choice.

The USB-C charger was put to the test by MacStories' Frederico Viticci, who discovered that it made a dramatic difference in charging time.With the screen on at 100%, airplane mode turned on, and background app refresh turned off, it took the iPad Pro 107 minutes, just under two hours, to charge from 0% to 80% using the USB-C charger. To compare, it took Viticci's iPad Pro 732 minutes, or a little over 12 hours, to charge from 0% to 80% in the same test.Indeed, the iPad Pro's 12.9-inch screen uses up a lot of power, especially when it's at 100% brightness.In fact, Viticci's iPad Pro took significantly less time to charge with the fast charging feature in every test he performed, including tests where he was using the iPad Pro to watch videos and play games, which tend to use up a lot power and slow down the charging process.USB-C is a new standard that can transmit power and data much faster than the regular USB we're used to.Some might be put off by the fact that you need to spend another $75 to charge your iPad Pro at a reasonable speed, especially after shelling out a tear-inducing $800 for the base iPad Pro model to begin with. If the slow charging speeds don't bother you enough where you'd need to spend even more money on the iPad Pro package, you can simply charge it overnight while you sleep.

Despite the company's success in the early 1980s with the Apple II and Macintosh computers, Apple was in big trouble by 1997. The company was hemorrhaging money. The final quarter of 1996 showed Apple's sales had plummeted 30% from the year before. There were simply too many products — Apple was selling a dozen versions of the Macintosh but couldn't advertise the computers' differences to people in simple terms. Shareholders were livid with Apple's leadership."It was insanity," Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of marketing who was working for Macromedia at the time, told Steve Jobs' biographer Walter Isaacson. "Tons of products, most of them crap, done by deluded teams."By September 1997, Jobs had cut 70% of Apple's product line and got Apple out of side businesses like printers and servers. "You are bright people," Jobs told one product group. "You shouldn't be wasting your time on such crappy products."This sudden change of strategy is what ultimately saved Apple, especially during that fragile time for the company. Für aktuelle iPhone, iPad und iPod touch Modelle steht ab sofort iOS 9.3 zum Download bereit, für Macs gibt es OS X 10.11.4 im Mac App Store und auch tvOS des Apple TV (4. Gen.) sowie watchOS der Apple Watch machen einen kleinen Versionssprung.

Apple hat im Anschluss an die Vorstellung des iPhone SE („SE" steht im Übrigen tatsächlich für „Special Edition" wie Apples Marketing-Chef Phil Schiller mittlerweile bestätigte) und des iPad Pro 9,7 Zoll auch eine Reihe relevanter Software-Updates für seine vier Plattformen veröffentlicht. Nach einer mehrere Monate andauernden Beta-Phase stehen somit ab sofort iOS 9.3, OS X 10.11.4, tvOS 9.2 und watchOS 2.2 für alle Apple-Nutzer zum Download bereit.Das umfangreichste Update unter den genannten vier Aktualisierungen ist iOS 9.3. Die neueste iOS-Version bringt neben Fehlerbehebungen und Sicherheitspatches beispielsweise einen Multi-User Modus für iPads mit, der vor allem für die Verwendung der Apple-Tablets in Bildungseinrichtungen nützlich sein soll, eine leicht überarbeitete Notizen-App, bei der der Zugriff auf Inhalte nun mit einem Passwort beziehungsweise dem eigenen Fingerabdruck geschützt werden kann, und der sogenannte Night Shift Modus, der dafür sorgt, dass das Display nachts eine deutlich wärmere Farbpalette darstellt, was sich Studien nach positiv auf das Schlafverhalten auswirken soll. Hinzu kommen außerdem einige Geräte-spezifische Anpassungen für das iPad Pro und das iPhone 6s (Plus). Bei den iPhone-Topmodellen wurden unter anderem für mehrere vorinstallierte Apps neue 3D Touch Shortcuts hinzugefügt.

OS X 10.11.4 enthält ebenfalls diverse Bugfixes und Sicherheitsflicken, die Liste der neuen Features ist aber deutlich kürzer als bei iOS 9.3. So hat Apple diesbezüglich dem Mac-Betriebssystem lediglich die Passwort-Funktion für die Notizen-App sowie Unterstützung für Live Fotos in den Programmen Nachrichten und Fotos spendiert. Bei tvOS 9.2 sind die für Nutzer sichtbaren Änderungen dann schon wieder etwas zahlreicher. Wer einen Apple TV der 4. Generation sein eigen nennt und das Update installiert, hat ab sofort die Möglichkeit, Texteingaben - inklusive Passwörter und Benutzernamen - mit Hilfe der neuen Diktierfunktion vorzunehmen. Außerdem bringt das tvOS Update beispielsweise Unterstützung für die Kopplung von Bluetooth-Tastaturen mit, Apps lassen sich nun in Ordnern zusammenfassen und Nutzer können via Siri-Sprachbefehl jetzt auch ganz gezielt nach bestimmten Apps im App Store suchen.Das wohl kleinste Update unter den jüngsten Apple-Veröffentlichungen stellt schließlich watchOS 2.2 dar. Die aktuellen Versionen von Apples Software-Plattformen iOS, OS X und tvOS können ab sofort direkt auf den dafür geeigneten Geräten heruntergeladen werden. Bei watchOS 2.2 muss der Aktualisierungsprozess wie von Apple Watch Updates gewohnt über ein iPhone gestartet werden.Apple hat heute nicht nur ein neues iPhone, sondern auch ein brandneues iPad Pro angekündigt. Genau wie das bereits erhältliche 12,9 Zoll iPad Pro bietet die Neuvorstellung einen leistungsstarken A9X Prozessor, einen Smart Connector und Apple Pencil Unterstützug, wartet allerdings zugleich mit einem deutlich kleineren 9,7 Zoll Display auf.Apple hat heute Abend im Rahmen einer Veranstaltung auf dem eigenen Firmencampus im kalifornischen Cupertino ein brandneues iPad Pro vorgestellt, das ein 9,7 Zoll großes Display besitzt. Das Tablet ist somit deutlich kleiner als das Ende 2015 auf dem Markt eingeführte iPad Pro mit 12,9 Zoll Display, bietet aber im Prinzip dieselben Features - Smart Connector, Apple Pencil Unterstützung, vier Lautsprecher - und wartet sogar mit Extras gegenüber dem großen Bruder auf.

Wie die Vorstellung des neuen Modells heute gezeigt hat, versucht Apple mit der iPad Pro Familie nicht mehr länger nur bisherige iPad-Nutzer von einem Upgrade zu überzeugen, sondern gezielt auch Windows-Nutzer anzusprechen, die einen mehrere Jahre alten PC Zuhause stehen haben. Die Kombination aus Leistungsfähigkeit, hochauflösendem Retina-Display, Funktionen wie der ansteckbaren Tastatur oder der Stifteingabe via Apple Pencil sowie die Simplizität von iOS sollen ganz unterschiedliche Kundenkreise überzeugen. Die Message von Apple ist ganz eindeutig: Das iPad Pro ist vielseitig einsetzbar und kann bei Bedarf auch einen PC ersetzen. Ob sich diese Strategie im Laufe dieses Jahres für die Kalifornier auszahlen wird, bleibt abzuwarten, zweifellos sind aber sowohl das bereits erhältliche als auch das neue iPad Pro edle Premium-Geräte mit beeindruckenden Spezifikationen.

Aufgrund der Display-Größe ist das iPad Pro 9,7 Zoll von seinem äußeren Erscheinungsbild her natürlich dem iPad Air 2 sehr ähnlich, wird dieses jedoch nicht in der Line-up ersetzen. Stattdessen verkauft Apple das Air 2 in Zukunft einfach etwas günstiger als bisher. Für das neue, kleinere iPad Pro beginnen die Preise hierzulande bei 689 Euro. Käufer erhalten zu diesem sicherlich gehobenen Preispunkt ein 9,7 Zoll Tablet mit 32 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher, Touch ID, Dual-Band-WLAN nach 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac und Bluetooth 4.2 sowie pfeilschnellem Prozessor.Das iPad Pro 9,7 Zoll wartet wie das iPad Air 2 mit einem 240 x 169,5 x 6, 1 Millimeter messenden Chassis auf und bringt 437 Gramm beziehungsweise 444 Gramm (LTE-Version) auf die Waage. Im Gehäuseinneren steckt der Apple A9X Chipsatz, der zusammen mit dem iPad Pro 12,9 Zoll sein Marktdebüt gab und zwei sehr flotte CPU-Kerne sowie eine PowerVR Series7XT Grafikeinheit integriert. Nicht bekannt ist bislang mit welchen Taktraten Apple die CPU- und GPU-Einheit des A9X im kleinere iPad Pro betreibt. Gut vorstellbar, dass diese im 9,7 Zoll Modell etwas niedriger ausfallen, um Apple die Möglichkeit zu geben, Faktoren wie Hitzeentwicklung und Akkulaufzeit besser kontrollieren zu können. Ebenfalls unklar ist die Größe des Arbeitsspeichers im neuen iPad Pro, weil Apple diese nicht angibt. Im 12,9 Zoll Modell sind 4 Gigabyte LPDDR4 RAM verbaut.

Zusätzlich zu den leistungsfähigen Komponenten, die wir vom 12,9 Zoll iPad Pro kennen, bringt die 9,7 Zoll Variante aber auch ganz neue Features mit. So reagiert das kleinere Modell allzeit auf den Sprachbefehl "Hey Siri" und Apple verbaut beispielsweise ein Display, das zum einen wieder mit Timing Controller daherkommt, zum anderen aber nicht nur den sRGB, sondern gleich den DCI-P3 Farbraum abdeckt und außerdem dank zweier Umgebungslichtsensoren Helligkeit und Farbtemperatur automatisch den gerade aktuellen Umweltgegebenheiten anpassen kann (True Tone Display).Ebenfalls ein Upgrade im Vergleich zum großen iPad Pro stellt die Kameratechnik der 9,7 Zoll Variante dar. Apple verbaut eine 12 Megapixel Hauptkamera mit True Tone Flash auf der Rückseite, die 4K-Videoaufnahmen erlaubt, sowie eine 5 Megapixel Frontkamera, vermutlich also genau dieselben Kameramodule wie sie beim iPhone 6s zu finden sind. Zum Vergleich: Das 12,9 Zoll Modell muss sich mit einer 8 Megapixel Hauptkamera und einer 1,2 Megapixel Frontkamera begnügen.

Analog zum großen Bruder wird Apple auch für das iPad Pro 9,7 Zoll den 110 Euro teuren Apple Pencil sowie ein 169 Euro teures Smart Keyboard, das via Smart Connector angeschlossen werden kann, als Zubehör vertreiben. Weitere Accessoires sind das Smart Cover aus Polyurethan für 59 Euro und die iPad Pro Silikon-Hüllen für 59 Euro.Gemäß offiziellen Angaben werden Interessenten das iPad Pro 9,7 Zoll genau wie auch das iPhone SE ab Donnerstag, den 24. März 2016 in den Farbvarianten Silber, Space Grau, Gold sowie Roségold vorbestellen können. Die Auslieferung soll dann ab dem 31. März 2016 erfolgen. Wie schon weiter oben im Text kurz erwähnt beginnen die Preise in Deutschland bei 689 Euro (UVP). Dafür erhalten Käufer das 32 Gigabyte Wi-Fi-Modell. Für 869 Euro gibt es dieselbe Modellvariante auch mit 128 Gigabyte Speicher oder für 1049 Euro sogar - und das eine Neuheit für Apples iOS-Hardware - mit satten 256 Gigabyte Speicher. Am 12. April 2016, um 14 Uhr mitteleuropäischer Zeit will der taiwanische Hersteller alle Details zum sehr wahrscheinlich "HTC 10" genannten Gerät nennen. Die Präsentation wird in diesem Jahr offenbar ohne glamouröses Presse-Event über die Bühne gehen, also nur direkt online über die Firmen-Homepage erfolgen.

Nach einigen Teaser, die über soziale Netzwerke verstreut wurden, hat HTC nun über Twitter ganz offiziell den Termin bekannt gegeben, an dem es sein nächstes Flaggschiff-Smartphone enthüllen wird: Am 12. Das kommende High-End-Smartphone des taiwanischen Herstellers ist in der Gerüchteküche aktuell schlicht und einfach als „HTC 10" bekannt, es wird also erwartet, dass HTC bei der Präsentation seiner neuesten Entwicklung auf den seit einigen paar Jahren genutzten Markenname „One" verzichtet.Die Enthüllung des neue 10 wird HTC am Dienstag, den 12. Ob es dazu einen Livestream geben oder aber das Gerät einfach nur mit Bildern, Videos und Spezifikationen vorgestellt wird, geht aus der HTC-Ankündigung nicht direkt hervor, wir tippen aber auf ersteres.

Wie mittlerweile bei so gut wie allen Technik-Neuheiten üblich, kennen wir aufgrund von Leaks auch im Fall des HTC 10 schon vor der offiziellen Enthüllung die wichtigsten Einzelheiten. Das Display soll 5,1 Zoll groß sein und mit QHD (2560 x 1440 Pixel) auflösen. Des Weiteren zur Ausstattung gehören sollen ein schneller Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 Prozessor, ein Fingerabdrucksensor, 4 Gigabyte RAM, bis zu 64 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher, ein microSD-Kartenslot und ein 3000-mAh-Akku. Software-seitig darf mit Android 6.0 Marshmallow inklusive der neuesten Version der bekannten Sense-Oberfläche gerechnet werden.

Abschließend lässt sich noch erwähnen, dass HTC das neue Smartphone sehr wahrscheinlich in diversen Farbvarianten anbieten wird. So verrieten es zumindest einige durchgesickerte Pressefotos. Somit ist im Grunde eigentlich nur noch ungewiss, ab welchem Zeitpunkt HTC das 10 im internationalen Handel verfügbar machen will. Darüber werden wir spätestens am 12. April berichten können.Für Mac-Fans, die derzeit sehnsüchtig auf die Vorstellung neuer Apple-Notebooks mit Intel Syklake Prozessoren warten, sollte die Geduldsprobe in wenigen Monaten vorüber sein. Wie die taiwanische Publikation Digitimes unter Berufung auf Angaben aus Industriekreisen informiert, wird Apple im kommenden Sommer - wahrscheinlich bis spätestens Juli - neue, besonders flache MacBook-Modelle mit 13 und 15 Zoll Display auf den Markt bringen.

Digitimes ist zwar bei Weitem nicht die verlässlichste Quelle, wenn es um Leaks zu kommender Hardware geht, allerdings ist zum einen häufig zumindest ein Funken Wahrheit an den Berichten der Webseite, und zum anderen passt die MacBook-Geschichte tatsächlich sehr gut zu den aktuellen Entwicklungen am Markt sowie zu Apples gängiger Praxis bei der Vorstellung solcher ganz neu designter Produkte.Es ist absolut kein Geheimnis, dass die aktuelle Notebook-Line-up des kalifornischen Unternehmens kein einziges Modell beinhaltet, das aktuellste Technik verwendet. Immerhin aus Designer-Sicht kann das kleine, flache MacBook mit 12 Zoll Retina-Display, welches im Frühjahr 2015 auf den Markt kam und von einem Intel Core M Prozessor mit Broadwell-Mikroarchitektur angetrieben wird, als fortschrittlich bezeichnet werden. Dahinter reihen sich das MacBook Pro mit 13 Zoll Retina-Display sowie das MacBook Air mit 11 und 13 Zoll Display ein, deren Industriedesign seit Jahren weitgehend unverändert ist, die aber im vergangenen Jahr immerhin mit Intel Core Prozessoren der Broadwell-Familie ausgestattet wurden. Das Schlusslicht hinsichtlich Aktualität stellt das MacBook Pro mit 15 Zoll Retina-Display dar, da Apple dort auf ein mittlerweile fast vier Jahre altes Chassis in Kombination mit Intels Haswell-Prozessoren setzt.

Auch wenn Apple mit die schnellsten PCI-Express SSDs auf dem Markt verbaut und im Laufe der Jahre immer wieder Detailverbesserungen an seinen Notebooks vorgenommen hat, ist spätestens jetzt klar, dass es für die MacBook Pro und MacBook Air Reihe Zeit für ein wirklich signifikantes Upgrade ist. Da sämtliche dafür geeigneten Intel Skylake Prozessoren seit Anfang 2016 ebenfalls gut lieferbar sind, sollte der Vorstellung neuer MacBooks in den kommenden Monaten nichts mehr im Wege stehen.Warum aber haben die Kalifornier die Ankündigung nicht auf dem gestrigen Event vorgenommen? Das könnte schlicht und einfach mit Apples Vorliebe zusammenhängen, brandneue Macs im Rahmen der WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) im Juni zu enthüllen. Das Unternehmen hat in der Vergangenheit schon Mehrfach die große Bühne seiner Entwicklerkonferenz genutzt, um neben den obligatorischen Software-Updates wichtige Mac-Neuheiten zu präsentieren, im Jahr 2013 beispielsweise den komplett neu gestalteten Mac Pro.

Falls unsere Vermutungen auf Grundlage der neuesten Gerüchte auch nur annähernd korrekt sind, wird Apple zur WWDC 2016 komplett neu designte MacBooks mit 13 und 15 Zoll Retina-Display präsentieren. Aus dem Digitimes-Artikel geht allerdings nicht hervor, ob diese Laptops dann MacBook Air, MacBook Pro oder einfach nur MacBook heißen werden. Der einzige zusätzlichen Hinweis, den es noch von der taiwanischen Publikation gibt, legt nahe, dass die neuen 13 und 15 Zoll Modelle flacher sein werden als das aktuelle MacBook Air. Das wirft jedoch weitere Fragen auf, wie beispielsweise: Kann Apple in einem so flachen Chassis Prozessoren und - potentiell - Grafikkarten unterbringen, die die Bezeichnung MacBook Pro rechtfertigen würden? Ungewiss erscheint außerdem das Schicksal der MacBook Air Reihe, da Apple das MacBook mit 12 Zoll Retina-Display und vor allem auch die iPad Pro Familie bereits als Nachfolger dieser Notebook-Modelle in Stellung gebracht hat.

Ein neuer Tag, neue Lecks im Umfeld der Smartphone-Hersteller: Nach all den Fotos der neuen Nexus-Smartphones ist heute mal wieder das taiwanische Unternehmen HTC an der Reihe. Der bekannte Brachen-Insider Evan Blass hat auf Twitter ein Pressefoto veröffentlicht, auf dem ein Smartphone mit dem Codenamen Aero von allen Seiten zu sehen ist. Dieses Modell sollte demnächst als HTC One A9 auf den Markt kommen. Es ist nicht das erste Mal, dass Bildmaterial zu dem Gerät durchsickert, allerdings ist das Aero nun erstmals in unterschiedlichen Farbvarianten zu sehen. Sollte das geleakte Foto das One M9 tatsächlich so zeigen, wie es auch in den Handel kommen wird, so dürften die Vergleiche mit dem iPhone 6 beziehungsweise 6s auf absehbare Zeit nicht verstummen. Das HTC-Smartphone wird offenbar sogar auch in sehr ähnlichen Farbvarianten erhältlich sein. Neben den vom iPhone 6s her bekannten Farbtönen Grau, Gold, Silber und Rosé Gold sollen allerdings noch Dunkelgrau/Schwarz und Violett hinzukommen.

HTCs Chefin Cher Wang hatte bereits vor ein paar Monaten kämpferisch angekündigt, dass es in diesem Jahr noch ein neues HTC-Flaggschiff geben wird. Damit will der krisengebeutelten Smartphone-Hersteller einen seit mehreren Jahren zu beobachtenden Negativtrend stoppen, während dem die One-Reihe zwar meist gut bei Tests weggekommen ist, aber im Konkurrenzkampf mit Apples und Samsungs Geräten sowie den Angeboten von aufstrebenden chinesischen Unternehmen dennoch stets das Nachsehen hatte. Das neue Topmodell, das dem im Frühjahr 2015 vorgestellten One M9 nachfolgen soll, wird also offenbar das besagte One A9 sein.Ob das One A9 die erhoffte Trendwende für HTC bringen kann, muss die Zukunft zeigen. Die Taiwaner scheinen sich dafür nach allem was wir bislang wissen auf eine Kombination aus eindeutig von Apple inspiriertem Design und relativ erschwinglicher Hardware der gehobenen Mittelklasse zu verlassen. Gemäß durchgesickerter Details wird das One A9 ein rund 7 Millimeter dickes Metallgehäuse und ein 5 Zoll großes Full-HD-Display bieten. Des Weiteren sollen der Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 Prozessor, eine 13 Megapixel Kamera auf der Rückseite, eine 4-UltraPixel-Frontkamera, 2 Gigabyte RAM, 16 Gigabyte Flash-Speicher, ein microSD-Kartenslot und ein 2150-mAh-Akku sowie ein Fingerabdrucksensor zur Ausstattung gehören.

Dabei ist nun auch das Nexus 5X in voller Pracht sowie in mehreren Farben zu sehen und vom Nexus 6P gibt es ebenfalls einen ersten Blick auf die unterschiedlichen Farbvarianten, die für Käufer zur Auswahl stehen werden. Wie es sich schon anhand der gestern kurzzeitig bei Amazon Indien aufrufbaren Einträge abzeichnete, wird es das Nexus 5X in den Farben Eisblau, Schwarz und Weiß zu kaufen geben. Ansonsten lässt sich festhalten, dass sich Nexus 5X und 6P von vorne betrachtet sehr ähnlich sehen. Bei beiden Modellen finden sich ober- und unterhalb des Displays feine Lochmuster, unter denen sich die Front-Lautsprecher befinden könnten. Der Fingerabdrucksensor sitzt auch beim Nexus 5X auf der Rückseite und direkt darüber das Kameramodul, dessen Einfassung sich leicht von der Oberfläche abhebt. Zusätzlich zu der bereits bekannten Modellvarianten mit weißer Rückseite wird das Nexus 6P offensichtlich auch in den Farben Gold, Schwarz und Silber angeboten werden. Android Police gibt diesbezüglich allerdings an, dass die goldene Version wahrscheinlich nicht auf allen Märkten erhältlich sein wird.

So hat Android Police sowohl Bilder von der Verpackung beider Geräte veröffentlicht, die die zuvor schon im Netz kursierenden Namen Nexus 5X und Nexus 6P bestätigen, als auch ein erstes offiziell wirkendes Pressefoto des neuen Nexus-Smartphones von Huawei (Nexus 6P). Des Weiteren haben kurzzeitig bei Amazon Indien gelistete Einträge die Spezifikationen des neuen Nexus-Smartphones von LG (Nexus 5X) preisgegeben. Werfen wir zuerst einen Blick auf die Verpackungen der demnächst erscheinenden Nexus-Smartphones. Yes, it’s expensive, but there’s been little else in that "power user” range just works the way it has — especially with its stellar keyboard, world-class trackpad, long battery life, and gorgeous display.It’s been more than a year since Apple updated the MacBook Pro line. A potentially significant update is coming, but in the meantime, a handful of Windows 10 devices have emerged as genuine alternatives in that high-end, pro-level bracket. (Microsoft’s own Surface Book is one, Lenovo’s Yoga 900 is another.)For the past month, I’ve been using two newer contenders: the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga, and the Vaio Z Flip. Though they both come with very real tradeoffs compared to the pure accessibility of the Pro, they also do things that any Apple machine simply cannot. They do have their differences, though — so I put them head-to-head.

If you’re on the fence about buying a new power notebook, it’s worth waiting and seeing what exactly Apple has up its sleeve. But if you don’t want the new macOS to nudge you into Apple’s ecosystem, or you just want to try something different, here’s a good look at what’s premium on the other side. To be clear, I used Lenovo's most expensive Yoga model, which includes a new Core i7-6600U chip, a whopping 16GB of RAM, and a big 512GB solid state drive. It costs $2,100.I used the second most expensive Vaio, priced at $2,000, which includes a Core i7-6567U chip, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD.In English: They’re strong. If you’re aren’t doing Professional Things, both will chomp through whatever you feed it.If you do want to keep a truckload of tabs open, edit photos, or what have you, both are up to the task there, too. I simply didn’t have any significant problems doing things with the horsepower that’s packed here. Just know that they aren’t built for gaming, and that they can get a pinch warm when stressed.

More specifically, the Vaio houses a 28-watt chip. That’s more powerful than the 15-watt CPUs most others use. The only major competitor to use a 28W model is, you guessed it, the MacBook Pro. But again, that’s using last year’s processors.So, if you bump the Vaio up to 16GB of RAM, it’s not only a tier above the Yoga, it’s one of the few Windows machines that can compete with, and even best, the highest-end MacBook Pro.To get that, though, you need to shell out $2,400. The entry-level, $1,400 model has a Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and a paltry 128GB of storage. If you need power user performance, I’d step up to my configuration. If you’ve ever seen a ThinkPad laptop, you’ve seen the X1 Yoga’s smooth, black matte finish before. The boxy look isn't flashy, but it fits the professional mold well. It’s also sturdy, and came up no worse for wear after being stashed in my backpack for a few trips.

The Vaio, meanwhile, puts more emphasis on aesthetics. Its cool, aluminum finish feels like it belongs on a laptop as expensive as this. It’s solidly built, and its creased, dark grey lid comes off as understated yet distinct.That’s one thing I like about both devices, really: They’re each doing their own thing, not aping the MacBook’s success.Another thing that’s easy to like is how thin and light they are. The Yoga is a pinch lighter — at 2.8 lbs, versus the Vaio’s 2.96 lbs — even though it’s bigger, while both come in at a fairly svelte 0.66 inches. Neither are a burden to carry, in other words. And technically, they’re both more compact than the MacBook Pro.Like many premium Windows notebooks, both the Yoga and Vaio are designed to be flexible and welcoming to touch controls. This is a major difference from Apple’s design philosophy, and often times, a big advantage over the MacBook Pro.

Now, for me, having a touchscreen means little when it’s time to do work. Using a web browser or Photoshop with your fingers isn’t fun, and Windows 10 does an iffy job of laying out its settings in tablet mode.But the freedom is appreciated. When I want to stream YouTube or WatchESPN, it’s nice to flip my laptop around and turn it into a mini TV, instead of reaching for the tablet I normally use the same way. You have to look at as an added bonus: Windows 10 has a lack of apps built for touch, but since it works fine the normal way, that’s not so bad.Both devices also come with styluses, which is good if you’re a designer or just don’t want your fingers to smudge up your screen. They’re both comfortable and accurate, though the Yoga’s stylus seemed a bit smoother in operation. The Vaio also lacks a slot for holding its pen, which could get annoying. I preferred the Yoga’s setup — if you want to turn it into a monstrous 14-inch tablet, just bend it back. When you do that, the keyboard becomes totally flush and sits flat. Again, Lenovo’s done this before, but it feels natural, and it works.

The Vaio, on the other hand, is a little more complex. Below its display is a "release” switch; hold it, and you can flip the screen 180°. (Hence the name.) This isn’t much of an inconvenience, and I can appreciate the engineering that went into building that without turning the rest of the machine into a mess, but the Yoga’s method just comes easier.Of the two, the Yoga is more of an out-and-out business laptop. As such, it packs more ports and connectivity options.MacBooks, these are not. Before that, there was Motorola. Its Atrix phone worked the same way, but its laptop dock cost $500, the software you used with it was half-baked, and the phone was only "strong” by 2011’s standards. Again, few people cared.Still, the dream hasn’t died. The latest group to give it a try is Andromium, a startup headed by alumni of Google and Y Combinator. Its new Kickstarter project, the Superbook, essentially flips the Atrix concept, and applies it to various Android phones. At its core, the Superbook is just a laptop shell. It’s got an 11.6-inch display with a 1366x768 resolution, a QWERTY keyboard with Android-specific keys, a multi-touch trackpad, and a battery that Andromium rates at eight or so hours of use. (Though that’ll move closer to 10 hours if Andromium reaches $500,000 in funding, which currently looks likely.) In a recent Reddit AMA, the company said the device is composed of soft plastic.In other words, it’s small and basic. It makes up for that by being cheap — it starts at $99 through Kickstarter, and the company expects it to start in the $129 range if and when it hits retailers. (If the campaign hits $1 million, the company plans to offer a slightly more expensive 1080p display option as well.)

To power it, you activate the Andromium OS app — which is available in beta form in the Google Play Store — on your phone, then plug it into the shell over microUSB or USB-C. You’re not limited to any particular model, but the company says the phone should have at least 1.5GB of RAM, a dual-core chip, and Android 5.0 or higher. (It also has to support the USB-OTG standard, but that shouldn't be an issue for the vast majority of devices.)The idea, as it’s always been, is to leverage your phone’s power with a laptop’s form factor. In Andromium’s eyes, buying a new phone then becomes akin to buying a new laptop. Now, that probably won't hold true for everyone. A cheaper phone won’t be as smooth as a pricier one. Plenty of Chromebooks are affordable and perfectly capable. And while your phone is a tiny computer, it’s not a tiny laptop — much of the Superbook’s success will come down to how well Andromium OS turns Android into competent desktop software.

That said, it does seem to have the basics down — a browser, a file manager, a taskbar, a launcher, some level of multitasking, etc. — and as we’ve seen on Chrome OS, Android itself has plenty of apps that translate well enough to desktops. You can watch videos on YouTube, write documents with Microsoft Word, and play a bunch of games. The Superbook's display isn't a touchscreen, though, which could make using those a little less natural.Andromium says it’ll open its SDK so developers can tailor their apps for Andromium, too, though how much support that gets remains to be seen.In any case, the campaign has raised more than $400,000 in a couple days of funding, way past its initial target. While the usual risk with crowdfunding projects remain, Andromium says its prototypes are finished, and that it hopes to ship the Superbook to backers by February 2017.Either way, given how strong today’s smartphones have become, the time might finally be right to make this nerd fantasy a reality. A Thursday report from The Verge points toward a major potential problem with USB-C, the new cable standard that powers an ever-expanding group of devices.The power stream through USB-C cables is reversible, meaning a laptop can power a smaller device through the same port it uses to charge. When Verge writer Dieter Bohn plugged his phone into his laptop, it drank too greedily from the computer's battery:I used a cheap cable I found on Amazon to charge my Nexus 6P and it drew too much power from my MacBook Air’s USB ports. Apple did a remarkable job engineering the MacBook’s ports — they shut down temporarily to protect themselves — but when they came back online, they only worked intermittently.I've experienced firsthand the pain of a faulty charge bricking a device, so this story resonates.Gadgets are built to pull as much juice as they can handle from power sources, and generally those sources aren't build to cap the flow through their ports. A cable's job is to let a gadget sip as hard as it can without overtaxing the source.

Bohn found a Google engineer, Benson Leung, who destroyed his Chromebook Pixel with another faulty cord. Leung's made a small reputation for himself online as the sole qualified person reviewing USB-C cords for safety online. He posts those reviews on Amazon. Here's his review of the cord that destroyed his laptop. But those reviews are hard to find — though an enterprising group of internetters have aggregated them online here.The problem here, which Bohn identifies, is that it's too easy to buy a USB-C cable that can fry your computer, and it's not enough to simply trust a few reviews. If USB-C is to succeed at becoming the universal data/power cord for gadgets, there needs to be a simple, quick method for anyone to determine if a cable is safe or not. And Amazon has to stop selling faulty ones online.Today, Lenovo took the wraps off the Yoga Book: A new tablet/laptop hybrid, offered in both Android and Windows 10 flavors, focused squarely on helping users be productive.

Like most tablets made in the last two years or so, the Yoga Book is taking its cues from Microsoft.Unlike most of those tablets, the Yoga Book seems to be inspired not by the Microsoft Surface, which even Apple has imitated with its iPad Pro— but rather the Microsoft Courier, a hotly-anticipated tablet that was first leaked to the press in 2008, and then killed on Bill Gates' orders in 2010, before it was even officially announced.The Courier would have been a dual-screen "booklet" PC. Rather than a keyboard, it sported two 7-inch touchscreens, connected by a hinge. With those two screens, you could use it as kind of a so-called "infinite journal," sketching or taking notes with a stylus on one side while reading the news or making appointments on the other.It's billed by Lenovo as a super-thin, super-light tablet. You may have noticed already that it doesn't have a keyboard, in the traditional sense. Instead, it's a funky kind of touchscreen, called the "Halo keyboard" by Lenovo, that basically tries to recreate the feeling of typing with a regular laptop keyboard without actually being one.

The Halo keyboard also gives the Yoga Book its best, and most Courier-esque feature:The Halo keyboard pulls double duty as a sketchpad, thanks to its neat wide-open hinge. If you lay down a piece of paper on top of the keyboard, and use the stylus that comes with the Yoga Book in its ballpoint pen mode (seriously, it switches), any notes you take will instantly be digitized and put on the main screen. It does the same thing without paper and with the stylus in its normal mode, but, well, that's less fun.Either way, as you can see, the spirit of the Microsoft Courier lives on in the Yoga Book. The second screen isn't quite the full-on touchscreen promised by the Courier (the Verge reports that Lenovo tried, but the second screen degraded battery life too much), but the core concept of a dedicated sketchpad has clearly endured. There's a case to be made that despite the hype, the Courier was little more than a science project that deserved to be killed. But times have changed since 2010, and maybe the moment is right for a stylus-driven tablet after all these years.

The Yoga Book will be available by the end of October, starting at $499 for the Android version and $550 for the Windows 10 model. Ob Apple das Problem nun wirklich für alle Nutzer vollständig und nachhaltig beheben konnte, werden die nächsten Tage - vielleicht auch Wochen - zeigen müssen. Abgesehen von der beschriebenen Fehlerkorrektur ist derzeit nichts über weitere Änderungen von iOS 9.3.1 bekannt.Nach der Ankündigung des Anniversary Updates für Windows 10 am gestrigen Abend hat Microsoft nun auch eine neue Windows Insider Preview für Tester im Slow Ring veröffentlicht. Die Vorschauversion mit der Build-Nummer 14295 ist sowohl für PCs als auch Smartphones erhältlich und gibt einen kleinen Ausblick auf einige der Neuerungen, die im kommenden Sommer alle Windows 10 Nutzer erhalten werden.

Microsoft hat im Zuge seiner aktuell stattfindenden Entwicklerkonferenz Build 2016 eine neue Insider Preview von Windows 10 für Tester im Slow Ring veröffentlicht. Die Vorschauversion trägt die Build-Nummer 14295 und ist sowohl für PCs als auch Smartphones erhältlich.Um Missverständnisse zu vermeiden, ist erwähnenswert, dass Build 14295 bereits vor einigen Tagen für Windows Insider im Fast Ring bereitgestellt wurde. Die Veröffentlichung der Version für Insider im Slow Ring markiert nun aber das erste Mal, dass sich auch diese Nutzergruppe einen Eindruck vom neuen Redstone-Entwicklungszweig machen kann. Redstone ist der von Microsoft intern verwendete Codename für das nächste große Windows 10 Feature-Update, das - wie wir seit gestern Abend wissen - ab Sommer 2016 als Anniversary Update für alle WIndows 10 Anwender verteilt werden soll.

Wie schon durch die Veröffentlichung von Build 14295 im Fast Ring bekannt, bringt die aktuelle Vorschauversion im Vergleich zum vorherigen Fast Ring Build 14291 keine neuen Features mit, sondern lediglich Fehlerkorrekturen. Für Tester im Slow Ring ist die Liste an Änderungen jedoch signifikant. Unter anderem neu sind für den Nutzer unsichtbare Änderungen am Betriebssystem-Kernel, die Unterstützung für Erweiterungen im Browser Edge (nur für PCs), eine generalüberholte Karten-App und der brandneue Feedback Hub.Neben Bugfixes und den genannten Neuerungen beinhaltet Build 14295 allerdings auch wieder eine Reihe noch nicht ausgemerzter Fehler. Diese sind in ihrer Gesamtheit sicherlich so relevant, dass sich jeder Anwender ganz genau überlegen sollte, ob er sich damit herumschlagen möchte. Für einige der bekannten Probleme liefert Microsoft aber auch gleich Übergangslösungen mit und mehrere der Fehler sind zudem als eher geringfügig zu bewerten. Wie dem auch sei, eine ausführliche Fehlerbeschreibung findet sich im offiziellen Blogbeitrag von Microsoft, mit dem Build 14295 ursprünglich angekündigt wurde.

Speziell in Bezug auf Windows 10 Mobile ist schließlich noch zu erwähnen, dass Build 14295 auf allen Geräten installiert werden kann, die bereits mit Windows 10 ausgeliefert werden, also auf Lumia 550, 650, 950, 950 XL, Xiaomi Mi4 und Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL. Darüber hinaus listet Microsoft auf dieser Webseite alle weiteren unterstützten Geräte auf.Microsoft hat den Auftakt zur Entwicklerkonferenz Build 2016 auch dazu genutzt, den bisherigen Erfolg von Windows 10 mit aktuellen Zahlen zu untermauern. So ist das Universal-Betriebssystem laut dem Softwareriesen mittlerweile auf mehr als 270 Millionen Geräten aktiv im Einsatz und damit die bislang am schnellsten von Kunden angenommene Windows-Version.

Microsoft gab heute im Rahmen der Build 2016 Keynote bekannt, dass Windows 10 seit dem Marktstart im Juli 2015 mittlerweile auf mehr als 270 Millionen Geräten läuft. Das bedeutet laut offiziellen Angaben, Windows 10 übertrifft die Adoptionsrate von Windows 7 im selben Zeitraum um 145 Prozent. Gemäß Microsoft-CEO Satya Nadella ist das Betriebssystem die sich bislang am schnellsten verbreitende Windows-Version und das sowohl für den Endverbraucher- als auch Enterprise-Markt.Wie des US-Unternehmen aber außerdem betont, wird Windows 10 nicht nur auf einer Vielzahl ganz unterschiedlicher Geräte - angefangen von Desktop-PCs, Notebooks und Tablets bis hin zu Smartphones oder der Xbox One - genutzt, sondern fährt auch Bestnoten bei der Kundenzufriedenheit ein. Anwender verbrachten mit dem Betriebssystem bislang mehr als 75 Milliarden Stunden, wie der Chef der Windows-Sparte Terry Myerson erklärte. Die Sterne scheinen aus Sicht Microsofts also gut für Windows 10 zu stehen.Die genannten Zahlen sind aber nicht nur für den Softwareriesen, sondern vor allem auch für Entwickler, die Apps für die sogenannte "Universal Windows Platform" und damit den Windows Store geschrieben haben, oder dies planen, relevant. Die potentielle Zielgruppe für solche Apps hat bereits eine ansehnliche Größe erreicht und wird wohl mittelfristig zügig weiter wachsen.

Natürlich darf aber nicht vergessen werden, dass die hohe Adoptionsrate von Windows 10 auch der Tatsache geschuldet ist, dass Microsoft das OS für Windows 7 und Windows 8 Nutzer seit dem Marktstart als kostenloses Upgrade bereitstellt. Im kommenden Juli wird dieses kostenlose Upgrade-Angebot allerdings nach aktuellem Informationsstand enden. Ob Microsoft bei dieser Strategie bleibt und, wenn ja, wie sich das auf die langfristige Adoption des Betriebssystems auswirken wird, muss erst einmal abgewartet werden. Das Unternehmen selbst sieht sich jedoch auf Kurs, das ambitionierte Ziel von einer Milliarde Windows 10 Geräten in den nächsten Jahren zu erreichen. Einen Beitrag dazu soll auch das für den kommenden Sommer eingeplante Windows 10 Anniversary Update leisten.Microsoft hat heute im Zuge der Eröffnungsveranstaltung zur Entwicklerkonferenz Build 2016 das Windows 10 Anniversary Update angekündigt. Auch wenn Unternehmen wie Microsoft, Dell oder Lenovo mittlerweile gezeigt haben, dass es auch für die alteingesessenen Spieler im PC-Mark möglich ist, schicke, leichte und hochwertig verarbeitete Notebooks oder 2-in-1-Geräte anzubieten, wird das Design von Apples MacBook-Familie nach wie vor als branchenführend angesehen. Dies will HP nun trotz weiterhin schrumpfender PC-Absatzzahlen und zugleich knallharter Konkurrenzsituation in diesem Geschäftsfeld ändern. Das US-Unternehmen plant in Kürze die Vorstellung einer neuen Notebook-Sensation.

Wenn es nach HPs Chef der PC-Sparte, Ron Coughlin, geht, dann wird HP jetzt das Innovationszepter von Apple übernehmen. So jedenfalls lautet die Kampfansage von Coughlin, die er gegenüber dem Wall Street Journal abgegeben hat. Natürlich klingen diese Worte zunächst einmal sehr gewagt, aber einige aktuelle HP-Produkte wie beispielsweise das auf den Geschäftskundenmarkt fokussierte Elitebook Folio G1 geben ihnen schon mal eine gewisse Nachhaltigkeit. Die neueste Entwicklung HPs, ein geheimnisvolles Notebook das morgen der Weltöffentlichkeit gezeigt werden wird, soll nun da anknüpfen, aber sogar nochmals dünner, fortschrittlicher und eleganter sein als das besagte EliteBook Folio. Auf diesem Weg soll das 12 Zoll Apple MacBook gleich auf mehreren Ebenen ausgestochen werden. Wie sich das neue HP-Notebook aber letztendlich darstellen wird muss für den Augenblick noch unbeantwortet bleiben.

Ungeachtet der vielen offenen Fragen steht aufgrund der getätigten Aussagen von HP schon fest, dass das Unternehmen mit dem kommenden super-flachen Laptop das absolute Premiumsegment des Notebookgeschäfts ins Ziel gefasst hat, um sich dort als führender Spieler zu etablieren. Es liegt auf der Hand, dass von Geräten für diesem Teil des Marktes keine hohen Absatzzahlen zu erwarten sind, allerdings geht es HP hierbei gar nicht primär um Verkäufe, sondern vor allem um das Prestige und darum, werbewirksam von sich als Design- und Innovations-Leader aufmerksam zu machen. Nicht ungleich Apple also gewissermaßen.Die technischen Details zum neuen Vorzeige-Notebook von HP und was es für Features zu bieten hat wird es bereits in einigen Stunden aus erster Hand geben. Den vorliegenden Informationen nach ist geplant, das Premium-Gerät morgen im Rahmen der International Luxury Conference der New York Times in Versailles, Frankreich zu enthüllen. Wir werden natürlich alle Einzelheiten zu dem Produkt liefern, sobald sie verfügbar sind.

Huawei wird am kommenden Mittwoch, den 6. April 2016 der Weltöffentlichkeit sein neues Flaggschiff-Smartphone P9 präsentieren. Nachdem bereits in den vergangenen Monaten Spezifikationen und Bilder zu dem Gerät durchgesickert waren, machen kurz vor dem Event noch einmal frische Leaks die Runde im Netz. So erhalten wir unter anderem den bislang besten Blick auf die Rückseite des P9 beziehungsweise die dort eingelassene Kameratechnik mit gleich zwei Modulen, die in Kooperation mit Leica entwickelt wurde, und bezüglich der wichtigsten restlichen technischen Details bleiben nun auch praktisch keine Fragen mehr offen. Schon einige Wochen ist es her als Huawei und der Kamera-Spezialist Leica eine strategische Partnerschaft ankündigten. Ende Februar gaben die beiden Unternehmen bekannt, künftig gemeinsam innovativer Lösungen im Bereich Smartphone-Fotografie entwickeln zu wollen. Das mit einem 5,2 Zoll großen Display, mehr RAM und einem edleren Gehäuse aufwartende Xperia Z5 wird Sony in Kürze ebenfalls auf den europäischen Markt bringen. Etwas später - wahrscheinlich im November -folgt dann noch das Xperia Z5 Premium , welches mit seinem 5,5 Zoll großen 4K-Display neue Maßstäbe im Smartphone-Markt setzen soll.Microsofts Surface 3 ist nun endlich auch in der LTE-Variante ganz ohne Umschweife im deutschen Handel zu bekommen. Das Tablet wurde bereits Ende März 2015 angekündigt und war seit Anfang Juli exklusiv für den Business-Sektor mit 4G-LTE-Modem erhältlich. Ein entsprechendes Modell für den freien Handel sollte innerhalb ein paar Wochen folgen, mittlerweile sind daraus knapp drei Monate geworden. Immerhin wird das nun bei diversen bekannten Händlern verfügbare Surface 3 mit LTE gleich mit vorinstalliertem Windows 10 ausgeliefert.

Das Surface 3 ist mit 4G-LTE-Modem erwartungsgemäß teurer als ohne. So kostet die Ausführung mit 64 Gigabyte Speicherkapazität und 2 Gigabyte RAM 719 Euro, die Variante mit 128 Gigabyte und 4 Gigabyte RAM 839 Euro. Das sind jeweils 120 Euro mehr als für die entsprechende Konfiguration ohne LTE. Im Preis mit inbegriffen sind zudem weiterhin weder Tastatur-Cover, noch Stylus. Mit dabei ist aber ein Jahresabonnement für Office 365 Personal.

Bis auf die LTE-Unterstützung ist das Surface 3 weiterhin so ausgestattet wie wir es kennen. Das Gerät verfügt über ein 10,8 Zoll großes Display, das ein Seitenverhältnis von 3:2 bietet sowie mit 1920 x 1280 Pixel auflöst, und wird von dem Intel-SoC Atom x7-Z8700 angetrieben, das mit einem Basistakt von 1,6 Gigahertz und bis zu 2,4 Gigahertz Burst-Takt arbeitet. Es verfügt des Weiteren über eine 8-Megapixel-Kamera auf der Rückseite und eine 3,5-Megapixel-Kamera auf der Vorderseite, Anschlüsse für USB 3.0 und Micro-USB, Stereo-Lautsprecher und einen microSD-Kartenleser. Für die Nutzung des LTE-Modems steht ein nano-SIM-Kartenslot zur Verfügung. Zur Konnektivität wird außerdem WLAN nach 802.11ac und Bluetooth geboten.

Das Gewicht des Surface 3 Tablets beläuft sich auf 622 Gramm. In unserem Test machte die Variante ohne LTE-Modem und noch mit Windows 8.1 eine sehr gute Figur. Sowohl Verarbeitungsqualität als auch die Eigenschaften des Displays und die gute Akkulaufzeit wurden gelobt. Kritik gab es im Grunde nur für den zu langsamen Ladevorgang und die Preise des optional erhältlichen Zubehörs. Diese Accessoires - nämlich eine Ansteck-Tastatur, ein Stylus und eine Docking-Station - sind jetzt natürlich auch für das Surface 3 LTE erhältlich. Das sogenannte Type Cover kostet 149,99 Euro, der Surface Pen 49,99 Euro und die Docking-Station 229,99 Euro. In Microsofts Online-Store gibt es für Studenten 10 Prozent Rabatt beim Kauf des Surface 3.HP hat drei überarbeitete Business-Notebooks der EliteBook-Reihe vorgestellt, die mit einem Prozessor der neuen AMD Carrizo Pro Familie ausgestattet sind. Die neuen Modelle tragen in Anlehnung an HPs typische Namenskonventionen die Bezeichnungen EliteBook 725G G3, 745 G3 sowie 755 G3 und warten mit einem 12,5 Zoll, einem 14 Zoll oder einem 15,6 Zoll großen Display auf.

Werfen wir zunächst einen Blick auf die neuen Carrizo Pro Chips von AMD, die den bereits bekannten Carrizo-Prozessoren sehr ähnlich sind. Insgesamt sind es vier APU-Modelle, die der US-Chiphersteller speziell für das Business-Notebook-Segment angekündigt hat. Alle sind mit einem ARM-Kern ausgestattet, durch den die AMD TrustZone Technologie für mehr Sicherheit bereitgestellt wird, und werden mit einem Qualcomms X5-LTE-Modem (bis zu 150 Mbit pro Sekunde im Download) kombiniert. Das Topmodell ist der A12 Pro-8800B, der über zwei Module beziehungsweise vier Rechenkerne verfügt, die mit 2,1 Gigahertz Basistakt und bis zu 3,4 Gigahertz Turbo-Frequenz rechnen. Wie bei allen AMD-APUs ist die Besonderheit des Chips die integrierte GCN-Grafikeinheit, die in diesem Fall 512 Shader-Kerne mit bis zu 800 Megahertz Taktfrequenz zu bieten hat.Darüber hinaus zur neuen Carrizo Pro Familie gehört der A10 Pro-8700B, der A8 Pro-8600B und der A6 Pro-8500B. Bei den beiden erstgenannten Chips handelt es sich ebenfalls um Quad-Core-Modelle, deren Basis- und Turbo-Takt aber niedriger ausfällt als beim A12 Pro-8800B und deren Grafikeinheit nur 384 Shader-Einheiten mit bis zu 800 Megahertz Taktrate in die Waagschale werfen kann. Der A6 Pro-8500B schließlich ist das kleinste Carrizo Pro Modell mit nur zwei Rechenkernen. Die GPU ist aber dieselbe wie bei A10 Pro-8700B und A8 Pro-8600B.

Die drei neuen Quad-Core-APUs von AMD sind mit DDR3-2133-RAM kompatibel und können vom Gerätehersteller je nach Bedarf auf eine TDP (Thermal Design Power) von 12 bis 35 Watt konfiguriert werden. Der Dual-Core-Chip A6 Pro-8500B verwendet DDR3-1600-RAM und läuft mit einer TDP von 12 bis 15 Watt.In HPs neuen EliteBooks kommen die drei Carizzo Pro Prozessoren A12 Pro-8800B, A10 Pro-8700B und A8 Pro-8600B zum Einsatz. Alle Business-Notebooks lassen sich mit einem nicht-reflektierenden IPS-Bildschirm mit Full HD-Auflösung (1920 x 1080 Pixel) oder einem einem Touchscreen mit einer QHD-Auflösung (2560 x 1440 Pixel).

Zu den weiteren Ausstattungsmerkmalen aller EliteBooks gehören je nach Modellvariante bis zu 32 Gigabyte Arbeitsspeicher, eine M.2 SATA SSD mit bis zu 512 Gigabyte, eine PCI-Express-SSD mit bis zu 256 Gigabyte, eine Hybrid-Festplatte mit 500 Gigabyte oder eine klassische Festplatte mit bis zu 1 Terabyte Speicherkapazität. Davon abgesehen gibt es einen Multi-Kartenleser und in Anbetracht des verbauten LTE-Modems einen SIM-Kartenslot. Als Betriebssystem ist Windows 10 Pro vorinstalliert.HP hat noch keine Preise und keinen exakten Verfügbarkeitstermin der von AMD angetriebenen EliteBooks für Deutschland bekannt gegeben. Die Wartezeit auf diese Informationen sollte aber nicht allzu lange ausfallen. In den USA sind die Business-Notebooks ab sofort zu Preisen ab 750 US-Dollar erhältlich.

Ende Oktober steht die Dell World Konferenz an und so sickern jetzt wenig überraschend aussagekräftige Informationen zu kommenden Geräten des US-Computerherstellers durch. Nur wenigen Wochen nachdem schon einmal über einen neuen Microsoft Surface Konkurrenten von Dell namens XPS 12 zu lesen war, hat WinFuture konkrete Details und qualitativ hochwertige Fotos des Convertibles in die Finger bekommen.Das neue XPS 12 trägt den Angaben der deutschen Publikation die Nummer 9250 im Namen, um es vom alten XPS 12 aus dem Jahr klar unterscheiden zu können. Wie zuvor schon einmal angedeutet wird das Hybrid-Gerät mit einem UHD- beziehungsweise 4K-Display aufwarten, das laut WinFuture ein IGZO-Panel von Sharp verwendet. Alternativ wird es das XPS 12 aber offenbar auch in einer günstigeren Ausführung mit Full HD-Bildschirm (1920 x 1080 Pixel) geben. Das XPS 12 9250 ohne Tastatur soll nur 790 Gramm wiegen und ein Chassis besitzen, das aus einer sehr robusten und hochwertig anmutenden Magnesiumlegierung besteht. Im Inneren des Gehäuses verbaut Dell gemäß den durchgesickerten Infos einen Intel Core M Chip, der erwartungsgemäß aus der 6. Core Prozessor Generation (Skylake) kommt. Daneben kommen scheinbar normale M.2 SATA SSDs mit unterschiedlichen Kapazitäten zum Einsatz und das Gerät lässt sich optional mit 4G LTE Modem erwerben. Außerdem verfügt es sowohl über einen microSD-Kartenslot als auch zwei externe Thunderbolt 3 Schnittstellen mit kompaktem USB Typ-C Anschluss sowie eine rückseitige 8-Megapixel-Kamera und eine 5-Megapixel-Frontkamera.

Wer das neue XPS 12 nicht nur als Windows 10 Tablet, sondern auch als vollwertiges Notebook nutzen möchte, der hat laut WinFuture die Wahl zwischen zwei dafür geeigneten Ansteck-Tastaturen. Zum einen soll es da eine mit 1,3 Millimetern Dicke besonders flache Ausführung geben, zum anderen eine besser ausgestattete, dafür aber dickere und schwere Version. Die zweitgenannte Tastatur wird aller Voraussicht nach mit hintergrundbeleuchteten Tasten, einem Glas-Trackpad und zusätzlichen externen Anschlüssen (1x USB Typ-C, 2x USB 3.0 und 1x HDMI-out) aufwarten.Da wie eingangs erwähnt die Dell World noch in diesem Monat stattfindet (20. – 22. Oktober 2015) ist davon auszugehen, dass das XPS 12 9250 auch im Rahmen dieser Konferenz offiziell enthüllt werden soll. Microsoft wird nach allem was wir bislang wissen schon etwas früher das Surface Pro 4 präsentieren. Der Redmonder Softwareriese hat am kommenden Dienstag, den 6. Oktober zu einem großen Hardware-Event nach New York City geladen. Für alle, die derzeit auf der Suche nach einem schicken neuen Windows 10 Convertible sind, dürften die kommenden Wochen also sehr spannend sein.
