Many of them have displays that twist around and fold, which I don't find much use for.But Dell's newest XPS 13 laptop is so excellent it persuaded me to give up my personal MacBook for Windows 8 for a week.The XPS 13 is light, gorgeous, and works well. If you want a Windows machine that's just as good, and perhaps better than, the MacBook Air, this is the laptop to buy.The XPS 13 comes in a few different configurations. My review unit comes with a 3,200 x 1,800 resolution touch screen, 256GB of solid state storage, 8GB of memory, and a Core i5 Intel processor for $1,399. If you wanted to go for the non-touch screen option with all of the same specifications, it would cost $200 less than a 13-inch MacBook Air with the same storage, memory, and processor.

You can get an entry level model without a touchscreen, a 1080p display, 128GB of storage, 4GB of memory, and a Core i3 processor for $799.No matter what configuration you choose, you'll probably be impressed with the XPS 13's screen. Dell's latest 13-inch laptop uses what it describes as an "infinity display," meaning the screen itself stretches almost completely from edge-to-edge. There's barely any bezel at all — which allows Dell to make a laptop that's the same size as a typical 11-inch notebook, but has a 13-inch screen.The so-called "infinity display" looks gorgeous too; colors really pop and images look bold. The screen itself is glossy, which I liked, but some may find distracting since it produces a bit of glare. It wasn't overwhelming though, and the glossy texture is necessary to make swiping the touchscreen easy and comfortable.The one problem I had with the screen, however, was that it seemed rather dim. Whenever I used it I had to keep the brightness cranked all the way up or at least above halfway to see content on the display easily.

Even though the XPS 13 is a bit cheaper than the MacBook Air, it's one of the few Windows laptops that can actually stand up to Apple's in terms of design. The lid and underside of the laptop are made of brushed aluminum, giving it a polished and premium look. When you open it up, you'll notice the keyboard deck is coated with a soft carbon fiber material, which makes it comfortable to rest your wrists as you type.Generally speaking, the keyboard is sturdy enough to make typing easy and enjoyable. But, if you're being picky like me, you'll notice the keyboard flexes a little bit when you press down on it. It's a minor complaint, but one worth noting.During normal use, the Dell PS 13 performed smoothly and quickly. Apps usually launched within two to three seconds, and the computer powered on in about 12 seconds. And the Dell XPS 13 is powerful too. Since it runs on Intel's newest processors, it boots up quickly and offers long battery life. With mixed usage, which included browsing the web, doing light work in Google Drive, and streaming content from Netflix, the laptop lasted for about nine hours. That's impressive, especially since I had to leave the display brightness at its highest setting during the majority of the time I used it.

There are few negative things to be said about Dell's new laptop. The glossy screen can sometimes produce glare, and the keyboard could be better. That's about it.So if you're in the market for a new Windows laptop, the XPS 13 is one of the best you can buy. If you want a 13-inch screen, this is the smallest laptop you'll find with a display of that size. The borderless screen, lightweight design, and aluminum build make one of the sexiest laptops out there — it's one of the only Windows laptops that can stand up to the MacBook Air in terms of sheer looks.A patent published on Thursday shows that Apple may be experimenting with fiber optic cables woven into regular fabrics to act as a simple way to show basic information. It wouldn't be like the traditional display you're using to read this article, for example. Instead, light travelling inside the fiber optic cables would need to shine through the gaps of the fabric it's woven into, which means it wouldn't be very high resolution.The patent describes that light could be shone along the "entire length or only portions" of the fiber optic cables, which could show numbers, letters, shapes, and different colors.

Apple lists "electronic wrist watches" (potentially the Apple Watch) as a device that could incorporate such technology. It could be used in an Apple Watch strap to show basic information to glance at without needing to wake the main display. Or you can be notified about certain events with color-coded light alerts.The patent also describes how this kind of secondary display could be used on other Apple products, like MacBook laptops, iPhones, and iPads to show you quick, glanceable information. The idea is similar to HTC's Dot View case for the HTC One M9 that lets light from the screen pass through holes in the case to see glanceable information. While it's a "functional as well as aesthetically pleasing attachment" for your Apple products (as Apple puts it in the patent), it sounds hardly revolutionary. But it could have some benefits, like saving the battery power you'd use to wake your iPhone or Apple Watch's screen when you simply want to glance at a quick piece of information, like the time.Still, there's no guarantee this will be a real thing. Apple has filed many patents that have never manifested into a physical product.One of the biggest advantages Microsoft's Windows platform has over Apple’s Mac operating system is its seemingly limitless choices.

Windows laptops come in all different colors, shapes, sizes, and prices, while Apple doesn’t really offer a budget option for its customers.Spending $500 or less on a laptop is usually considered cheap, but HP’s new Stream laptop is so inexpensive its price is almost unheard of.The Windows 8-powered Stream starts at $199 — which is less than half of what you’d usually pay for a computer of its size.That’s because Windows computers aren’t just competing against Macs anymore. Over the past several years, laptop manufacturers have been working with Google to release a newer type of computer called the Chromebook.Unlike Windows or Mac laptops, Chromebooks are primarily designed to work with an Internet connection, and the offline experience is still limited. You can’t run desktop programs like iTunes or Skype since only a select few services work offline.They’re incredibly cheap (usually in the $200-$380 range), and that’s why they’ve become so appealing — especially in classrooms. Microsoft is now trying to compete against Chromebooks with Windows computers like the Stream, which offer the full benefit of Windows at a similar price point.

It loads web pages extremely fast, which was one of the few drawbacks I noticed with the HP Stream. For a super cheap computer, the Stream ran pretty smoothly any booted up quickly (only 9 seconds!). But web pages loaded noticeably slow on both my home and work Wi-Fi networks, which are usually both fairly fast.

The HP Stream isn’t the sexiest-looking gadget, but it’s damn light, which is important if you frequently commute with your laptop or take it to class. I traveled with the HP Stream in my purse on the subway and it never weighed my shoulder down. In fact, I almost forgot I even had a computer in my bag.The deep blue color was attractive enough, but the plasticky, two-toned blue keyboard deck made it feel a bit like a toy. Again, this is a laptop that’s about a quarter of the price of something like the MacBook Air, so I wasn’t expecting the most premium design.The keyboard itself was surprising sturdy. Although the individual keys felt a bit cheap, I didn’t experience that flexy feeling I’ve dealt with previously when using cheap laptops. If I had to recommend one Bluetooth speaker to most people shopping on a budget today, I’d pick the JBL Flip 3. It’s the most well-rounded portable speaker I’ve tested for less than $100, and, considering that price, it doesn’t have any glaring, deal-breaking weaknesses.

As a thing you carry around, the Flip 3 is convenient. Its cylindrical frame is compact and rugged, with a decent sense of heft and a pleasing fabric material that make it feel not-cheap in the hand. There’s a handy carrying loop attached to its side, and a generally straightforward set of volume and playback controls blended into its body. And while it’s not waterproof, it is water-resistant — I’ve used it numerous times in the shower without issue. Unless you need something to float in the pool, that’s enough.The whole thing pairs quickly over Bluetooth 4.1, and can link up to three devices at once. So you can, say, stream music from your laptop, then take a call from your phone without have to disconnect either. (It’s perfectly decent as a speakerphone, by the way.) Depending on how loud you play, its battery lasts about 10-12 hours, which, again, is totally fine. All the basics are down pat here.Sound is what matters, though, and it’s there where the Flip 3 is most compelling. Everything still has to be qualified with the phrase "for a small Bluetooth speaker,” but keeping those limitations in mind, the Flip 3 plays loud, full, and balanced. The mids are clean, the highs are crisp, and the lows have more presence than most other speakers of this size.

It’s still too small to get anything in the way of really deep sub-bass, and it’ll distort slightly at absolute max volume, but that’s standard procedure with these things. Stick to less complex tracks at moderate-to-high volumes — as you should with any cheap, tiny Bluetooth speaker — and you’ll see the Flip 3 is competing with pricier options like the UE Boom 2 more than peers like the UE Roll, which is better for the outdoors but is neither as loud nor as lush. My only real complaint is that it sounds better when placed horizontally, but scoots around a bit if you play it too loud in that position. Beyond that, there just isn’t much the Flip 3 gets wrong. You could argue that NFC or aptX support would be nice, but neither of those are out-and-out necessary. Otherwise, your only question is if you need a more rugged device, like the Roll, or if you can pay extra for something superior sounding, like the Bose SoundLink Mini II. If you’re in the middle, though, the Flip 3 gets you a little bit of everything.Whether for work or pleasure, traveling shouldn’t be stressful. But if you’re the type who can’t stop using things with screens — i.e., if you’re a human in 2015 — you may have no choice but to lug along an overflow of gadgets. That might not only include your basic smartphone, tablet, or laptop, but also a handful of accessories needed to keep them up and running.

If that sounds like a problem you’ve had before, the HooToo TripMate Elite should help you pack a little lighter. Priced at $38, it’s an all-in-one device that simultaneously serves as a portable battery, USB wall charger, travel WiFi router, and a network-attached storage (or NAS). It packs all this into something the size of a glossy black MacBook charger.Considering how many mini routers, NAS devices, and chargers there are that can’t do their one job right, it’s easy to be skeptical of something that claims to replicate all of them at once. The TripMate, however, actually does work. It isn’t the best at any one of its functions, but it’s serviceable enough at each to come in handy on the go.As a battery and wall charger, it works fine. It has a foldable AC plug and two USB ports built-in — one at 1A, the other at 1/2.1A — and carries a 6,000mAh capacity. That’s enough to charge most smartphones about twice, and most tablets around halfway. When you need to charge the TripMate itself, you just plug it into an outlet.

The router and personal cloud features are a little more exciting. Of the two, the router functionality probably works best. It’s altogether simple to set up, and when plugged into a modem, gets close to your maximum internet speeds. There’s an ethernet port on its back, so if you’re staying in a hotel room with just a cabled connection, you can just hook it up here and make it wireless. The device can also act as a bridge for multiple wireless connections at once. And with a little ingenuity, you can use it to get something like a Chromecast working over previously inaccessible networks.As a NAS, the TripMate isn’t quite as robust. The TripMate app you need to use to access your stuff is still a bit clunky, and the device itself doesn’t have any included storage. If you’re willing to fiddle around with it, though, it’s at least possible to hook a hard drive or microSD card up to the device, then stream video or music files you have on it through the cloud. It’s consistent enough to be useful on a long flight or train ride.You can find individual batteries, wall chargers, NAS devices, and routers that perform better, but then you have to keep track of four separate things. Given how much this thing does for its size (and price) — and given the 4.4 rating it has on Amazon after 2,600 user reviews — the TripMate is a great companion for any tech-savvy traveler. There are lots of extremely cynical theories over why this might be, not least because driving demand for Lightning-based headphones would be a very good thing for Beats, an Apple subsidiary.

Regardless, Apple insists that removing the headphone jack was an act of "courage;" a bold willingness to sacrifice the comfortably familiar and push us toward the wireless-headphone future. Plus, ditching the classic 3.5 mm jack apparently makes room for bigger batteries and better cameras inside the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.So let's take Apple at face value here. Apple's move toward wireless headphones is a super-important signal of how it's looking at the next wave of technology — and hints at the next wave of computing to come.But first, it's in Apple's best interests (and maybe your own) that they teach you to never take your headphones off, ever.The keys to the whole affair are Apple's new $159 AirPod wireless headphones. Technically, they're standard Bluetooth earbuds/microphones, so they'll work with any old Windows PC, Android phone, or Blackberry you may have lying around.But the real magic of the AirPods come when you use them with a Mac, iPhone, or iPad: Thanks to Apple's proprietary W1 chip, the AirPods smoothly and seamlessly pair with any iPhone or iPad in range, provided they're running iOS 10. When the new macOS Sierra comes out later this September, it'll work with that, too.

Most importantly of all, the AirPods lack any kind of physical buttons whatsoever. The only control on the AirPods, at all, is a touch sensor that activates Siri, Apple's voice assistant. It's that one-touch access to Siri that best showcases Apple's ambitions for the AirPods, for Siri, and for how people should be using computers.Apple has spent a lot of time and energy making sure people know that next week's iOS 10 update comes with some big upgrades to Siri, including the ability to access and use other apps. In other words, you'll be able to use Siri to send money with Square Cash or reply to a WhatsApp message, as well as control your Apple HomeKit-compatible smart appliances, all with your voice.From there, it's a natural progression: The AirPods make it easier than ever to use Siri.Siri lets you use your apps without taking your phone out of your pocket or checking your Apple Watch. So, ideally, you'll keep your EarPods in even when you're not listening to music.Since they don't have wires, AirPods are way less obtrusive than your usual headphones. And because they sync with all your Apple gadgets, it means that same one-touch access to Siri can follow you from phone to tablet to laptop. Siri's on the Apple TV, too, so it seems reasonable that it'll get AirPod syncing one day.

This has a big business benefit for Apple, since it means you need at least an iPhone to take full advantage: Without access to Siri, the EarPods are just Bluetooth headphones. It's an important driver to keep people in the Apple product family as the smartphone boom grinds to a halt.But it's also a tantalizing glimpse at the possibilities of using Siri to spend less time staring at a screen and more time living your life.That increased reliance on Siri is Apple's short- to medium-term vision. In the long-term, though, Apple can get really weird with it, in some exciting ways. Bislang, da Steve Hemmerstoffer, der unter dem Twitter-Nutzernamen @OnLeaks als der derzeit wohl zuverlässigste Leaker bekannt ist, nun offenbar einige der wichtigsten Details zur kommenden Nexus-Line-up zugespielt bekommen hat.

Den Angaben von Hemmerstoffer nach wird es in diesem Jahr tatsächlich wie zuvor mehrfach suggeriert zwei Nexus-Smartphones geben, die sich beide zwar klar unterscheiden, aber dennoch jeweils Flaggschiff-Ansprüchen gerecht werden können. Das kleinere der kommenden zwei Nexus-Modell soll von dem südkoreanischen Hersteller LG, das größere vom chinesischen Unternehmen Huawei produziert werden.Nach dem Nexus 5 vom Jahr 2013 ist LG zurück als Hersteller eines Nexus-Smartphones. Das möglicherweise wieder Nexus 5 genannte neue Modell soll den jüngsten Enthüllungen nach ein 5,2 Zoll großes Display, ein Metall-Gehäuse, zwei Frontlautsprecher, einen Fingerabdruckscanner auf der Rückseite sowie einen USB Typ-C Anschluss besitzen. Die Abmessungen des Geräts betragen laut Hemmerstoffer 146,9 x 72,9 x 8/9,8 Millimeter. Sollten diese Maße korrekt sein, wäre das neue Nexus 5 deutlich größer als der Vorgänger, was neben der leicht erweiterten Displayfläche vor allem an den zwei Frontlautsprechern liegen könnte.

Das zweite von Huawei produzierte neue Nexus-Smartphone soll allem Anschein nach der Nachfolger des letztjährigen Nexus 6 werden und dürfte diesen Namen wohl auch übernehmen. Das Phablet soll ein 5,7 Zoll Display bieten und davon abgesehen einige derselben Features wie das kommende Nexus 5. Die Rede ist ebenfalls von einem Metallchassis, Fingerabdruckscanner auf der Rückseite, USB Typ-C Anschluss und Frontlautsprecher. Die Maße des Huawei Nexus 6 betragen laut Hemmerstoffer 159,4 x 78,3 x 6,6/8,5 Millimeter.Bezüglich Ausstattungsmerkmalen wie Kameras, SoC oder Arbeitsspeicher macht der der Leaker in seinen Tweets leider noch keine Angaben. Vielleicht folgen diese Details aber schon bald. Frühere Berichte sprachen diesbezüglich von bis zu 4 Gigabyte RAM, aktuellen Qualcomm-Prozessoren der Oberklasse und einer Hauptkamera mit 13 Megapixel (Nexus 5) beziehungsweise 21 Megapixel (Nexus 6) Sensor. Davon abgesehen ist natürlich so gut wie sicher, dass die neueste Android-Version - derzeit nur als Android M bekannt - auf den beiden Smartphones bereits vorinstalliert sein wird. Wann genau und zu welchen Preisen die neuen Nexus-Flaggschiffe auf den Markt kommen werden, ist aber weiterhin unklar. Als Termin für die Markteinführung tippen wir wie auch andere auf Oktober.

Rund zwei Wochen nach dem globalen Marktstart von Windows 10 für PCs wird Microsofts Windows-Entwicklerteam nun verstärkt den Fokus auf die Fertigstellung von Windows 10 Mobile für Smartphones richten. Untermauert wird diese Aussage von Microsoft-Mann Gabe Aul durch die Veröffentlichung einer neuen Vorschauversion des Mobil-Betriebssystems. Die neue Version trägt die Buildnummer 10512 und kann ab sofort von Windows Insidern auf dem Fast Ring heruntergeladen werden.In den letzten Tagen waren erste Screenshots von exakt diesem Windows 10 Mobile Build im Netz aufgetaucht, aber Neuerungen konnten darauf nicht erkannt werden. Wie sich jetzt herausstellt, gibt es auch tatsächlich keine auf den ersten Blick erkennbaren Änderungen im Vergleich zur vorherigen Beta mit der Buildnummer 10166, die erstmals vor einem Monat verteilt worden war. Microsoft selbst gibt allerdings an, mit dem neuen Build 10512 über 2000 Fehler behoben zu haben. Die vielleicht auffälligsten Verbesserungen finden sich in den Bereichen Performance-Optimierung und Systemstabilität sowie bei der Fotos-App.

Ganz allgemein gesprochen konzentriert sich Microsoft jetzt darauf, die Gesamtqualität von Windows 10 Mobile weiter zu verbessern. So schreibt es jedenfalls Aul in seinem Blogbeitrag. Zudem sollen frische Builds des Mobil-Betriebssystems ab jetzt wieder regelmäßiger und in kürzeren Abständen hintereinander an Insider ausgeliefert werden.Zu den von Microsoft erwähnten Neuerungen des Build 10512 gehört unter anderem, dass auf der SD-Karte installierte Apps nun auch nach einem Neustart des Smartphones ordnungsgemäß funktionieren, die Kamera über den Sperrbildschirm aufgerufen werden kann und fehlende Benachrichtigungen beim Eingang neuer Textnachrichten der Geschichte angehören. Das Hintergrundbild des Sperrbildschirms lässt sich außerdem nun direkt über die Fotos-App festlegen.

Ein Umstand demonstriert allerdings nachhaltig, dass die Arbeiten an Windows 10 Mobile selbst nach Veröffentlichung dieser neuen Beta noch längst nicht abgeschlossen sind. Auch Build 10512 kommt wieder mit einen nicht gerade unbedeutende Reihe an Fehlern daher. So müssen Windows Insider beispielsweise damit klarkommen, dass die App Filme & TV aktuell nicht funktioniert, weil die Videowiedergabe im neuen Build hakt, oder dass es bei Smartphones mit sehr vielen auf den Startbildschirm gepinnten Kacheln zu einem gravierenden Absturz kommen kann, der nur durch ein Zurücksetzen des Smartphones oder ein Roll-Back zu Windows Phone 8.1 (via Windows Phone Recovery Tool) behoben werden kann. Weitere bekannte Probleme wie die derzeit nicht zu gebrauchende Mobile Hotspot-Funktion nennt Microsoft im Blogbeitrag.Trotz aller nach wie vor bestehender Ungereimtheiten soll Windows 10 Mobile Berichten nach Ende des 3. Quartals 2015 fertiggestellt werden. Das Mobil-Betriebssystem wird dann zunächst an Smarpthone-Hersteller ausgeliefert und danach für eine Reihe von bekannten Lumia-Smartphones als Update verteilt werden. Davon abgesehen werden von Microsoft im Oktober oder November zwei brandneue Lumia-Flaggschiffe mit Windows 10 Mobile erwartet.

Apple hat Version 6 von Boot Camp veröffentlicht, die Unterstützung für die 64-Bit-Variante Windows 10 mitbringt. Außerdem enthalten sind neue Treiber. Mac-Nutzer können also mit Hilfe der Software nun auch ganz offiziell Microsofts Windows 10 parallel zu OS X 10.10 Yosemite installieren. Anschließend kann beim Boot-Vorgang des Macs eines der Betriebssysteme nach Wahl gestartet werden.Wie genau es funktioniert, Windows 10 als Dual-Boot-Option auf einem Mac zu installieren, erklärt Apple auf dieser Support-Webseite detailliert. Natürlich wird für den Vorgang eine 64-Bit-Version von Windows 10 benötigt, die entweder als offizielle ISO-Datei von Microsoft oder auf einem USB-Stick samt Installer vorliegen kann, sowie ein Mac, der mindestens aus dem Jahr 2012 stammt. Zu beachten ist bei der Installation von Windows 10 auf Macs mit Fusion Drive, dass Boot Camp die Partition mit Windows automatisch auf den mechanischen Bereich des Laufwerks schiebt, was sich negativ auf Zugriffszeiten auswirkt. Die Partition mit OS X liegt hingegen auf dem Flash-Speicher-Bereich.Dank Boot Camp 6 und den mitgelieferten Treibern ist laut Apple auf unterstützten Macs unter Windows 10 die Verwendung von USB 3, USB Typ-C (bislang gibt es diesen Anschlusstyp nur beim neuen MacBook mit Retina-Display), Thunderbolt und SuperDrive (DVD-Brenner) möglich. Zudem können auch verbaute SD-/SDXC-Kartenleser, Apple-Tastatur sowie Magic Mouse und Trackpad samt Gesten genutzt werden.Ein direkter Download der Boot Camp Software in Version 6 wird von Apple derzeit im Übrigen noch nicht angeboten. Das Update kann somit derzeit nur von Nutzern heruntergeladen werden, die bereits eine Windows-Version auf ihren Mac installiert haben und dort die Apple-Softwareaktualisierung aufrufen.

Das nächste Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco steht vor der Tür. Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung, die vom 18. bis 20. August 2015 stattfinden wird, erwarten wir die Veröffentlichung einer Fülle an Details zu den kommenden Skylake-Prozessoren (Core-Prozessoren der 6. Generation). Die Webseite FanlessTech wollte aber offenbar keine Woche mehr abwarten und hat vorab Informationen zu einem Teil der Skylake-Familie verraten. Hauptsächlich handelt es sich um Einzelheiten zu Prozessoren der sogenannten U-Serie, die überwiegend in Ultrabooks und Convertibles, dem MacBook Air sowie kompakten Mini-PCs zum Einsatz kommen sollten.Vorne weg muss angemerkt werden, dass die von FanlessTech publizierten Infos authentisch wirken und zu schon bekannten oder ebenfalls zuvor durchgesickerten Angaben passen, aber es besteht natürlich dennoch die Chance, dass die finalen Spezifikationen der Chips schlussendlich etwas von den folgenden inoffiziellen Details abweichen oder die vollständige Liste der U-Serie-Prozessoren umfangreicher ausfällt. Falls die geleakte CPU-Liste aber komplett ist, hat Intel seine Line-up endlich etwas verschlankt und damit übersichtlicher gemacht.
