Außerdem finden in der Mobil-Workstation bis zu 32 Gigabyte DDR4-RAM und unterschiedliche Datenträgertypen mit bis zu 1 Terabyte Speicherkapazität Platz.

Das neue Precision 15 misst laut Dells Angaben 35,71 x 23,55 x 1,14 bis 1,68 Zentimeter und bringt 1,78 Kilogramm auf die Waage. Bei Erscheinen wird das Gerät also wahrlich eine sehr mobile Workstation repräsentieren. An externen Schnittstellen besitzt das Notebook laut Dell zwei USB 3.0-Ports und einen Thunderbolt 3.0 Anschluss. Hinzu kommen noch ein SD-Kartenleser und ein HDMI-Port. Beim Kauf können Kunden im Übrigen zwischen einem 56 Wattstunden- und einem 84 Wattstunden-Akku wählen, wobei der größere Energiespeicher mit rund 16 Stunden Laufzeit das Gerät etwa 5 Stunden länger mit Strom versorgen soll als der kleinere.

Dell will die interessante Precision 15 5000 Serie im vierten Quartal 2015 auf den Markt bringen. Einen exakten Termin für den Marktstart und einen Preis gibt es aber leider noch nicht. Eventuell erfahren wir diesbezüglich Ende des Monats zur Dell World Konferenz mehr.Wie versprochen hat Google zu Beginn dieser Woche Android 6.0 Marshmallow für mehrere seiner Nexus-Geräte veröffentlicht. Das sogenannte Factory Image der neuesten großen Android-Version kann für das Nexus 5, Nexus 6, das Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9 und den Nexus Player direkt von Googles Servern heruntergeladen werden, muss dann aber vom Nutzer auch manuell auf dem jeweiligen Gerät installiert werden. Wer bezüglich der Installation nicht selbst Hand anlegen möchte oder kann, der darf sich gewiss sein, dass die Softwareaktualisierung in Kürze auch als OTA (over the air) Update auf den genannten Nexus-Smartphones und –Tablets landen wird.

Bei der Entwicklung von Android 6.0 Marshmallow hat Google natürlich an dem erst im letzten Jahr mit Android 5.0 Lollipop eingeführten "Material Design" festgehalten, es aber noch weiter verfeinert. Dennoch bleibt visuell aber alles wohl bekannt. Neu sind in erster Linie die Optimierungen unter der Oberfläche des Systems, die neuen Stromsparfunktionen und Sicherheitsfeatures sowie ein überarbeitetes App-Berechtigungssystem.Die vielleicht wichtigste und für Nutzer auffälligste Neuerung von Android 6.0 nennt sich allerdings "Now on Tap". Now on Tap stellt dem Nutzer auf Knopfdruck Informationen zu den gerade auf dem Bildschirm dargestellten Inhalten zur Verfügung. Diese Informationen reichen von Infos zu Filmen, Musik und anderen Medieninhalten, über Ortsangaben, bis hin zu Personenbeschreibungen und vielem mehr. Außerdem bietet Android 6.0 native Unterstützung für Fingerabdrucksensoren, wie sie die neuen Nexus-Smartphones Nexus 5X und Nexus 6P mitbringen werden.

Bislang ist noch unklar wann Android 6.0 Marshmallow auch auf den ersten Flaggschiff-Geräten von Herstellern wie Samsung, Motorola, LG oder HTC landen wird. Es sollte aber noch vor Jahresende soweit sein.Am morgigen Dienstag, den 6. Oktober 2015 hält Microsoft ein großes Event in New York City ab, das ganz im Zeichen von auf Windows 10 zugeschnittener Hardware stehen soll. Aufgrund diverser Leaks und Insider-Tipps wissen wir bereits, dass es dort unter anderem die zwei neuen Flaggschiff-Smartphones Lumia 950 und Lumia 950 XL mit Windows 10 Mobile zu sehen geben wird. Fast schon erwartungsgemäß sind also am vergangenen Wochenende noch einmal neue Fotos beider Smartphones im Netz aufgetaucht. Die Aufnahmen sind vor allem deshalb interessant, weil sie noch einmal zwei, drei Ausstattungsdetails näher beleuchten können.

Zu den grundlegenden technischen Daten von Lumia 950 und Lumia 950 XL muss einen Tag vor dem Microsoft-Event nichts mehr gesagt werden. Technikbegeisterte dürften die wichtigsten Details bereits mehrfach gelesen haben. Eines der frisch veröffentlichten Bilder scheint nun allerdings endgültig belegen zu können, dass zumindest das Lumia 950 XL mit einem austauschbaren 3340-mAh-Akku daherkommen wird. Da Microsoft beim Lumia 950 eine sehr ähnliche Chassis-Konstruktion verwendet, ist beim kleineren Modell ebenfalls ein solcher Wechsel-Akku wahrscheinlich. Im Vergleich zu früheren Premium-Modellen der Lumia-Reihe und diversen aktuellen High-End-Smartphones auf dem Markt könnte sich das als signifikantes Unterscheidungsmerkmal herauskristallisieren.

Die weiteren kürzlich veröffentlichten Fotos zeigen sowohl das Lumia 950 als auch des Lumia 950 XL in einem nicht näher erläuterten Prototyp-Stadium. Diesen Aufnahmen nach sind beide kommenden Lumia-Flaggschiffe von Microsoft mit einem Dreifach-LED-Blitz ausgestattet, welches sich positiv auf die Fähigkeiten der Kamera unter schwierigen Lichtverhältnissen auswirken dürfte. In der bisherigen Berichterstattung war dieses Feature stets nur dem 950 XL zugeordnet worden. Es bleibt allerdings noch abzuwarten, ob es der das fortschrittliche Blitzlicht auch in die Verkaufsversion des Lumia 950 geschafft hat. Von Kamera und Blitzlicht abgesehen gewähren die Bilder auch einen Blick auf die Infrarot-Diode, die zum häufig erwähnten Irisscanner der Geräte gehört. Der Irisscanner soll es möglich machen, dass Nutzer die Smartphones nur durch kurzes Anschauen sicher entsperren können. Außerdem liefern die Bilder offenbar die Bestätigung für die Existenz von Dual-SIM-Versionen beider Lumia-Flaggschiffe.

Microsoft wird das Lumia 950 und das Lumia 950 XL aller Voraussicht nach während seiner Veranstaltung morgen Nachmittag (ab 16 Uhr deutscher Zeit) enthüllen, der Marktstart soll aber erst Ende Oktober oder Anfang November erfolgen. Neben den Smartphones werden in New York außerdem mindestens ein neues Surface-Pro-Tablet sowie der rundum verbesserte Fitness-Tracker Microsoft Band 2 erwartet.Motorola hat bekannt gegeben, auf welchen seiner Smartphones in naher Zukunft Android 6.0 Marshmallow laufen wird. Auf der eigenen Webseite verrät die Lenovo-Tochter, dass die neuesten Modelle Moto X Play, Moto X Style und Moto G der 3. Generation (2015), das Moto X der 2. Generation (2014) sowie das Moto G der 2. Generation (mit und ohne LTE) ein entsprechendes Update bekommen werden. Leider gibt es aber noch keinen konkreten Auslieferungstermin für die neue Software von Motorola.

Es ist zwar nicht vollkommen ausgeschlossen, dass sich an der genannten Liste unterstützter Smartphones noch etwas ändert, aber sollte kein Gerät mehr dazukommen, so dürften sich vor allem Käufer eines Moto E der 2. Generation enttäuscht zeigen. Dieses Modell wurde erst im Februar 2015 vorgestellt, scheint in Motorolas Update-Planungen schon jetzt aber keine Rolle mehr zu spielen. Das Nexus 6, welches Motorola für Google baut(e), bekommt aber natürlich Android 6.0. Das wurde bereits in der letzten Woche vom Internetriesen bekannt gegeben.Neben den diversen Neuerungen, die Android 6.0 mitbringt, wird Motorola eigenen Angaben nach mit Erscheinen des Updates für die erwähnten Geräte auf das Mitliefern von drei der eigenen, bislang vorinstallierten Anwendungen verzichten. Diese sind: Moto Assist, Motorola Migrate und Motorola Connect. Die Begründung des Unternehmens für die Entscheidung leuchtet ein. Laut Motorola hat Google die Funktionalität von Moto Assist und Motorola Migrate direkt in Android 6.0 implementiert, was ihre Existenz überflüssig macht. Im Fall von Motorola Connect, mit dessen Hilfe alle auf dem Smartphone eingehenden SMS-Nachrichten auch auf PC oder Mac im Browser Chrome gelesen werden konnten, sei es hingegen so, dass es dafür im Play Store mittlerweile diverse gute Alternativen gebe und SMS-Nachrichten ohnehin immer mehr an Bedeutung verlieren würden.

Sony verkauft das Xperia Z5 Compact ab sofort in Deutschland. Die Mini-Version des neuesten Flaggschiff-Smartphones der Japaner, sprich dem Xperia Z5, wurde zusammen mit dem großen Bruder im Rahmen der IFA 2015 vorgestellt und bietet abgesehen von einem kleineren Display eine sehr ähnliche Ausstattung. Der empfohlene Verkaufspreis des Xperia Z5 Compact liegt hierzulande bei 549 Euro.Sonys Nachfolger für das Xperia Z3 Compact aus dem vergangenen Jahr verfügt wieder über ein 4,6 Zoll großes HD-Display (1280 x 720 Pixel), ist aber zum einen mit dem leistungsstarken Octa-Core-Prozessor Snapdragon 810 von Qualcomm ausgestattet, und wartet zum anderen mit einer brandneuen, deutlich verbesserten Hauptkamera auf der Rückseite auf. Diese besitzt einen 23-Megapixel-Sensor. Die Frontkamera mit ihrem 5-Megapixel-Sensor wurde ebenfalls verbessert. Zur Ausstattung gehören außerdem 2 Gigabyte RAM, ein 2700-mAh-Akku, ein mit 32 Gigabyte doppelt so großer interner Flash-Speicher als beim Z3 Compact und ein microSD-Kartenslot.

Anders als beim größeren Z5 kann das Chassis des Z5 Compact nicht mit Premium-Materialien aufwarten, sondern besteht aus Kunststoff. Nichtsdestotrotz ist das kompakte Smartphone aber wieder nach IP68-Zertifizierung gegen Staub und Wasser geschützt. Zu den Besonderheiten des Z5 Compact zählen zudem noch ein in den seitlich angebrachten An/Aus-Schalter integrierter Fingerabdrucksensor sowie eine dedizierte Taste für die Kamera. In Sachen Betriebssystem wird das Gerät ab Werk mit Android 5.1 Lollipop inklusive Sonys eigener Oberflächenanpassung ausgeliefert. Sollte bei der Produktion der neuen iPad-Modelle für Apple alles nach Plan verlaufen, ist mit der Vorstellung des diesjährigen iPad-Portfolios analog zu den vergangenen Jahren im Oktober zu rechnen.

Wie die Kollegen von WinFuture.de in Erfahrung bringen konnten, wird das neue Satellite Click 10 von Toshiba mit einem 10,1 Zoll großen Touch-Display und der Auflösung von 1.920 x 1.200 Pixel (FullHD, WUXGA) auf den Markt kommen. Unter der Haube sorgt der neue Intel Atom x5-Z8300 Prozessor mit integrierter Intel HD Graphics und einer Taktrate von bis zu 1,84 GHz für den Antrieb des Tablets. Von eben diesem werden laut Intel nur 2 GB Arbeitsspeicher unterstützt, auf die auch Toshiba setzt. Obwohl die Unterstützung von Microsoft Windows 10 gewährleistet ist, blicken potentielle Nutzer mit dieser RAM-Größe eher skeptisch in die produktive Zukunft.Mit an Bord des Toshiba Satellite Click 10 sind zudem zwei Kameras mit 8 Megapixel Sensor an der Rückseite und 2 Megapixel an der Front des Tablets. Zu den Anschlüssen gehören MicroUSB und Micro-HDMI, sowie USB 2.0 Schnittstellen und ein Kartenleser am Tastatur-Dock. Mit an Bord sind außerdem die Funkmodule für WLAN-n und Bluetooth 4.0. Erstmalig sollen wir im neuen Toshiba-Tablet auch den separaten Knopf für die Steuerung des Microsoft Cortana Assistenten wiederfinden.

Bei einem Gesamtgewicht von 1,09 kg und einer Bauhöhe von 19 Millimeter reiht sich das Toshiba Satellite Click 10 Tablet mit seinem Docker in die typischen Abmessungen für Ultrabooks ein. Anfang August soll der Hybrid mit 32 GB Speicher für 380 US-Dollar den amerikanischen Markt erreichen. Knapp 450 US-Dollar muss man einplanen, wenn man sich für die 64 GB Version entscheidet. Noch wurden die technischen Daten und die Preisgestaltung von Toshiba nicht bestätigt.Die technischen Daten des neuen Oppo Mirror 5 sprechen für sich. Auf 5 Zoll zeigt sich eine Display-Auflösung von 960 x 540 Pixel mit TFT-Standard. Dabei ist das Smartphone knapp 160 Gramm schwer und 7,65 Millimeter dick. Unter der Haube werkelt ein Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 MSM8916 Quad-Core-Prozessor mit einer Taktrate von 1,2 GHz. Hinzu kommen 2 GB Arbeitsspeicher, die Adreno 306 Grafikeinheit und 16 GB interner Flash-Speicher. Letzterer kann mit Hilfe einer optionalen MicroSD-Karte um bis zu 128 GB erweitert werden.

Außerdem wird es in einigen Ländern eine Dual-SIM-Option für das Oppo Mirror 5 geben. Der fest integrierte Akku setzt auf eine Kapazität von 2.420 mAh. Obwohl Oppo noch keinen Preis für sein neues Smartphone bekannt gegeben hat, sprechen die Spezifikationen für eine Einordnung unter 300 Euro. In diesem Preisbereich bewegt sich zum Beispiel auch das Samsung Galaxy A5 mit ähnlicher Ausstattung.Eine Besonderheit des Oppo Mirror 5 bringt die Rückseite mit sich. Diese ist aus Glas gefertigt und stellt eine reflektierende Diamant-Struktur dar. Das erinnert uns stark an die alten HTC Touch Diamond Smartphones, die in den Jahren 2008 und 2009 verkauft wurden. Großen Wert legt Oppo auch auf die Kamera-Software, wobei die Sensoren mit 8 Megapixel an der Rückseite und 5 Megapixel an der Front vergleichsweise niedrig auflösen, dafür aber eine f/2.2 Blende verwenden. Gefunkt wird über WLAN-n, Bluetooth 4.0 und je nach Variante des Oppo Mirror 5 Smartphone mit 3G UMTS oder 4G LTE. Wie bei den meisten Geräten ist auch ein Infrarot-Blaster mit an Bord, mit dem ihr zum Beispiel Fernsehgeräte steuern könnt. Als Betriebssystem dient Google Android 5.1 Lollipop, über dem der hauseigenen Oppo ColorOS 2.1 Skin liegt.

Aktuell macht der Smartphone-Hersteller HTC eher mit seinen strauchelnden Geschäftszahlen Schlagzeilen als mit neuen Produkten. Da kommt die Nachricht des kostenlosen Google Android M Updates für das vergleichsweise alte HTC One M8 für Fans der Geräte gerade recht. Bereits Ende Juni hat Mo Versi, Vice President of Product Management bei HTC, auf Twitter angekündigt, dass die Aktualisierung angeboten wird. Der erstellte Tweet wurde als Antwort auf die Frage eines Followers gepostet und ging somit im schnelllebigen Twitter-Stream unter. Ein Leser der Kollegen von Android Police wurde allerdings fündig.

In vielen Online-Shops wird das HTC One M8 Smartphone noch geführt. Der Preis beläuft sich auf circa 400 Euro, je nachdem für welche Farbe, Speicherausstattung und SIM-Option man sich entscheidet. Das 5 Zoll Modell setzt auf einen FullHD-Bildschirm mit einer Auflösung von 1.920 x 1.080 Pixel. Als Prozessor wird der Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 Quad-Core-Chip samt Adreno 330 Grafik eingesetzt. Ihm zur Seite stehen 2 GB Arbeitsspeicher und wahlweise 16 GB oder 32 GB interner Flash-Speicher. Gefunkt wird über 4G LTE, 3G UMTS und 2G EDGE. Weiterhin ist ein WLAN-ac Modul mit Bluetooth 4.0 und NFC verbaut. Über den Infrarot-Sender könnt ihr zudem Fernsehgeräte steuern. Die Hauptkamera des HTC One M8 bringt 4 Megapixel (UltraPixel) mit, während die Frontkamera auf 5 Megapixel setzt. Dabei bringt das Smartphone mit Aluminium-Gehäuse knapp 160 Gramm auf die Waage und zeigt eine Bauhöhe von 9,35 Millimeter.

Nachdem bereits die wichtigsten technischen Details durchgesickert sind und zuletzt auch der potentielle Termin für die offizielle Vorstellung an die Öffentlichkeit gelangte, gibt es nicht mehr viel, das wir noch nicht über das Galaxy Note 5 sowie das Galaxy S6 Edge Plus von Samsung wissen. GSMArena hat kürzlich auch noch Unterlagen in die Finger bekommen, auf denen detaillierte 3D-Modelle der kommenden Mobilgeräte zu sehen sind. Die 3D-Modelle sollen Zubehör-Herstellern für die Entwicklung eigener Produkte wie etwa Schutzhüllen dienen und sie verraten daher unter anderem die Form und die exakten Maße der beiden Phablets.

Anhand der 3D-Modelle lässt sich erkennen, dass das Galaxy Note 5 eine vermutlich aus Glas bestehende Rückseite besitzen wird, von der sich das Kameramodul deutlich abhebt. Neben der Kamera befinden sich offenbar der LED-Blitz und der Pulsmesser, Lautsprecher und Kopfhöreranschluss scheinen wie beim Galaxy S6 am unteren Ende zu sitzen. Dort findet sich auch ein microUSB-, aber kein USB-Typ-C-Anschluss sowie der Einschub für den S Pen. Letzterer soll Gerüchten nach beim neuen Note-Modell den Stift auf Knopfdruck automatisch auswerfen. Die Maße des Note 5 betragen laut 3D-Modell 153,3 x 76,1 x 7,9 Millimeter.Das Galaxy S6 Edge Plus ist dem Note 5 in vielerlei Hinsicht sehr ähnlich, bietet aber trotz identischer Bildschirmgröße etwas kompaktere Abmessungen, nämlich 154,4 x 75,8 x 6,9 Millimeter laut 3D-Modell. Außerdem fehlt der S Pen-Einschub.

Den durchgesickerten Spezifikationen des Galaxy Note 5 nach wird das neue Samsung-Phablet ein 5,7 Zoll großes QHD-Display besitzen und von einem Exynos 7422 Prozessor plus 4 Gigabyte RAM angetrieben werden. Der intern verbaute eMMC-Speicher soll aufgrund der zum Galaxy S6 sehr ähnlichen Bauweise des Gehäuse nicht erweiterbar und der 4100-mAh-Akku nicht wechselbar sein. Beim Galaxy S6 Edge Plus soll Samsung da nicht viel anders gemacht haben. Das Phablet mit beidseitig gekrümmten Bildschirm soll allerdings keine Unterstützung für den S Pen bieten und ist wohl entweder mit einem Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 oder einem Exynos 7420 ausgestattet. Davon abgesehen sollen beide Geräte eine 16-Megapixel-Hauptkamera und eine 5-Megapixel-Frontkamera bieten.Zwischen Butter und Milch befindet sich am morgigen Donnerstag (16.07.) auch ein neues Android-Smartphone in den Regalen von ALDI Nord. Der Discounter bietet das Samsung Galaxy J1 zu einem guten Preis von 89,99 Euro an. Im Vergleich zu anderen Online-Shops sparen preisbewusste Käufer circa 10 Euro. Ein Grund sich in die ALDI-Schlange schon am Morgen einzureihen? Das verrät euch unser kompakter Test des Geräts.

Gefunkt wird über WLAN-n, Bluetooth 4.0, 2G EDGE und 3G UMTS. Zum Betrieb des Smartphones wird außerdem eine Micro-SIM-Karte benötigt.

Wie am Beispiel von Windows 10 gut erkennbar ist, verfolgt Microsoft nun bei so gut wie allen seinen Software-Lösungen einen neuen Ansatz. Die Produkte werden als Services betrachtet, an denen kontinuierlich weiterentwickelt wird. Achtung: Zum Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung des Artikel waren von den deutschsprachigen Apps Word, Excel und PowerPoint für Windows 10 noch immer nur die Preview-Versionen im Windows Store erhältlich.

Anders als bislang angenommen werden am 29. Juli 2015 laut Microsoft einige PCs im internationalen Handel erhältlich sein, auf denen das neue Windows 10 bereits vorinstalliert ist. Starting in September, the Google Chrome web browser will no longer automatically show Adobe Flash advertisements, the search giant announced yesterday.Chrome is the second most popular browser for desktop and laptop computers, with about 28% market share, behind only Microsoft Internet Explorer, according to NetMarketShare.The change, first announced in June, is just Google's latest attack against Adobe Flash.Flash had been the standard for interactive web content since it was introduced in the early 2000s. But there has been a huge industry pushback in the last few years, mainly from Apple — which never supported Flash on the iPhone or iPad — and more recently Google.

In large part because of Apple and Google's resistance, Flash never really caught on with mobile devices, but it's still alive and well on the desktop and is particularly used by advertisers.Why the hatred? Where Flash is slow and doesn't run well on mobile, HTML5 is faster and works on just about everything with a web browser without the same impact on battery life.

To that end, Google is offering a bunch of tools for advertisers to translate their ads from Flash to HTML5, plus even more options for making new ads in the HTML5 standard.Otherwise, if you want to stick with Flash, you're going to have to trust that a user will manually click on your ad to get it to play, which is a sucker's bet and a waste of your ad dollars.Google Chrome, as the second most popular desktop web browser in the world — behind Internet Explorer — has a lot of leverage when it comes to getting advertisers to go their way.Creating your own living room PC setup is an easy way to make any TV a smart one. Games, music, movies, simple web surfing — attaching a computer to your TV may not be as pretty as a Roku, but it puts the whole of the Internet at your disposal.The problem is that laptops are designed to go on your lap, not to be hooked into a television. If even that is too much, or you just want something to type up some Word docs on the flight, I don’t mind the $170 Lenovo Ideapad 100s, either.Unless you splurge on something like a Surface Pro 4 — which still appears to be as good as it gets, for a hybrid — your tablet will probably get more mileage as a consumption device than a production one on the road. It’s mostly something for movie watching, web browsing, book reading, and game playing.To nobody’s surprise, Apple’s iPad line still has the best mix of gorgeous design, super fast performance, and dead simple software for making all that a pleasure. If you grab the iPad Air 2, you’ll get something that’s at least somewhat accommodating to most people’s work too.

The iPad mini 4, meanwhile, is about as powerful as the Air 2, and more compact, but won’t be as friendly if productivity is a big deal.The entry-level iPad mini 2 is the weakest in the series, and has a comparatively lesser display, but it’s still great for the money, and a little less unwieldy by default. The sheer user-friendliness of iOS on tablets keeps it a step above just about any other budget tablet on the market.For pure value, though, the $50 Amazon Fire is tough to top. It’s a cheap slate, to be sure, but it’s consistently competent where it matters. If you just want to pass the time with a few videos, especially if you’re an Amazon Prime member, it’s a great buy for the cash-strapped.If you’d really rather not crunch your laptop into your bag, packing a portable keyboard will make working with your tablet less of a headache than it’d be with a virtual QWERTY pad.These don’t get much lighter and thinner than the Logitech Keys-to-Go, which is what one of the Surface Pro’s Touch Covers would be like if it had genuine feedback and travel. It’s totally spill-resistant, too, and these days you can find it for a relatively affordable $35 or so.

Its ultra-thin design won’t be for everyone, however. If you’d rather a slightly more traditional, though no less affordable, keyboard, the Logitech K380 feels good, looks good, and isn’t a burden to carry around.If you’re the type who spends your rides plowing through books, Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite is a great buy. The Kindle ecosystem is far and away the most reliable of the e-reading crop, and the fine display, big battery, and built-in backlight of the Paperwhite make accessing it very smooth. The only noteworthy issue is that it’s not waterproof; if that’s a concern, Barnes & Noble’s Nook GlowLight Plus should do the trick.You don’t need me to explain why your smartphone is an important travel accessory. There’s a good chance it runs your life as it is. But if you’re a frequent traveler in the market for a new phone, it’s worth picking up an unlocked model — i.e., one that isn’t tied down to a particular carrier.You’ll still pay a little more for it upfront — though times are changing — but one perk you’ll gain in return is the ability to swap out SIM cards and switch carriers if you’re heading overseas. You’ll keep coverage and avoid pricey roaming charges as a result, and most of the time you’ll even make a little more cash when it comes time to resell the device.

None of this really changes which smartphones are best, though: The iPhone 6s is still great for most people, what with its wonderful camera, blazing fast performance, full display, and eternally supported app store. There isn’t really anyone for whom it’s outright bad. Just about all of that applies to the Samsung Galaxy S7, too, and its camera is even better. Huawei’s Nexus 6P is a fantastic alternative for phablet aficionados, meanwhile, and the Alcatel OneTouch Idol 3 is a well-rounded choice for those on a budget.And if you just need a cheapo old-school phone in case of emergencies, you can look to something like the Blu Tank II. Don’t judge.Alright, you’ve made it to the hotel, and you want to relax a bit before heading back into the wild. You can catch some Netflix on one of many solid media streamers, but of the cheaper and more compact dongles on the market, I like the new Roku Streaming Stick.

Its UI doesn't heavily favor one service the way the Amazon Fire TV Stick does, it doesn’t require an outside device like the Google Chromecast, and it's faster than both. It can bypass the pesky captive portals that keep some streamers from connecting at hotels, and its app now lets you connect headphones for private listening. For $50, it does almost everything you need, and does it well.You can liven up that hotel room (or the drive to it) by blasting some music (or just some NPR) through a quality Bluetooth speaker. There’s an overwhelming number of options to choose from, but the JBL Flip 3 nets you a full, smooth sound, about 10-12 hours of battery life, water resistance, and a sturdy, colorful design for less than $100. It’s good value.If you’re backpacking or generally heading outdoors, though, a more diminutive speaker like the JBL Clip+ might work better. As its name implies, it has a built-in carabiner clip that lets it easily attach to a bag or belt loop. It also has the same water resistance. It can’t get as powerful as the Flip 3, naturally, but its sound is still crisp, clear, and largely free of distortion. It’s a superb choice in the $40-50 range.

As we’ve noted before, HooToo’s series of TripMate devices are explicitly designed to make traveling more convenient. The TripMate Titan is the high-end model of the group, and acts as a serviceable portable battery, travel WiFi router, and network-attached storage all at once.It isn’t outstanding in any one of those areas, but it’s the rare all-in-one that actually does multiple things well. It isn’t particularly big, either. For $59 (normally), it’s a fairly affordable way to consolidate a few handy devices into one.Still, many of you may not need a travel router or NAS to make it through your trip. A portable battery, on the other hand, is almost always something you’ll be glad to have brought with you.Anker is a tried-and-true name in that market, and its new PowerCore batteries are smooth, slim, and efficient. At $20 for a 10400mAh unit or $40 for a 20100mAh pack, they aren’t overly expensive either.That they have near-perfect user reviews on Amazon at the moment should give you an idea of how reliable they are. If you have a long ride ahead, there’s just a heightened sense of security that comes with having one of these things around. They’re usually worth the bag space.

Then there’s the obvious power-related stuff. Regardless of what gadgets you bring on your travels, it can never hurt to have a few spare microUSB and/or Lightning cables around in case one gets misplaced along the way. Again, Anker has reliable and affordable options here with its PowerLine microUSB Cable and Lightning-to-USB Cable.Likewise, if you wind up in a hotel room that doesn’t have enough outlets to charge all your devices, a small power strip like Belkin’s SurgePlus Mini Charger can come in handy.Finding steady internet on the go (or in a spotty hotel room) is a notorious hassle, but you can bypass much of that annoyance with a mobile hotspot. If you can’t or don’t want to use your phone as such, Verizon’s Jetpack MiFi 6620L is a dependable, consistently well-reviewed option. Like most MiFi routers, it’s not cheap, but Verizon’s network has long been the fastest and most expansive in the country. If you live on the road, it could be a wise investment.Finally, your gear will be more prone to disasters when you’re outside the confines of your home. As such, it’s worth another reminder that you should really go out of your way to backup your data before heading off. If you’re working with a handful of important files in particular, bringing along a spare flash drive is a simple and space-efficient way to keep them safe.

The differences between most USB sticks aren’t enormous, practically speaking — just make sure you buy a USB 3.0 one — but the SanDisk Extreme gets you proven fast read/write speeds and a fair amount of space at an affordable price.
